Had a lovely one night stay here as a couple. Location was perfect, it is right in the heart of the city, with 3 public transport options: bus, train and metro. We stayed in the standard room with city view and the room had everything you needed. Every corner of the hotel was clean, including the public areas such as the public bathroom, gym and sauna. What we really loved was the sauna, it was well maintained and well equipped with towels and free cold water for the guest to indulge. Breakfast was amazing as well with a lot of options. Lastly the staff were very warm and welcoming. I’d definitely visit again.

I did not book breakfast in advance, as I usually do. On Friday morning, I went to reception and clearly stated: “I would like to book breakfast for two days, and I will pay in cash when I check out. Please do not charge my debit card.” This was acknowledged and accepted. However, they still proceeded to charge my debit card without my knowledge. On Sunday morning, I paid approximately 80 euros in cash upon checking out. Later, when I checked my debit card balance on my way back to London, I noticed a declined charge from Thon Hotel, which is not what I had requested.

Now that the trip is coming to an end, we only have a couple of more hotels to stay in this evenings and tomorrow’s is the THON hotel in Brussels. We had a couple of visits en route to the hotel so we didn’t get there until quite late in the afternoon. We found the car park reasonably easy but actually parking was a pain in the bum and we ended up going down to level -2 but we did find a parking space right next to the door that takes us to the lifts straight up into the hotel. Once up into the hotel we got to the desk and greeted by what can only be described as a twelve year-old child attempting to be a receptionist, he came across as not having a clue what he was doing and no matter what we said or did he did not seem to understand. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but considering how close this hotel is to the politics area, and that so many would be speaking English, you would think that any hotel would ensure that their staff would understand, sorry, but we were tired, and just wanted to crash out, but he made everything so much more complicated, changing his mind and just not doing things simply. We asked about parking and he proceeded to advise us that it would cost us €45 per day to park in the car park which to be honest is a blatant rip off. IMHO. Unlike me, I made a bit of a sarcastic comment stating that we don’t pay that sort of price in London to park, Which we do not, He trotted off to the office at the back and came back with €27.50 which we assumed was per day however, that turned out to be the cost for the two days so we saved a fair bit of money there. and if that is the cost that they came up with, why are you charging €45 per DAY. We went up to the room and to be fair it was a nice room. Plenty of space lots of room to get around the bed which in this case was a proper king-size bed not two singles shoved together which has been quite a rare thing on this trip. There was a fridge which we soon filled with our own food and drinks, there was also tea and coffee making facilities with a kettle and coffee machine, we made use of the kettle, but with our own tea bags and milk. No water was supplied but there were glasses in the side, a large desk and chair, where the telephone was, and a reasonable sized TV which had a lot of British TV channels, all the terrestrial channels and a few others. Talking of that poxy phone, I do not know if it is a standard thing but it kept flashing the green display all night and kept saying that it was initialising. It was aggravating and off-putting when trying to watch the television. And the green light was quite bright when trying to get to sleep. We had two windows in the room which looked out onto the main street one window which was pointless really as it was only a matter of inches wide and reached from the ceiling about 2/3 of the way down the same height as the main window but that filled about a third of the wall there was net curtains and nice decent thick curtains to block out the light. It was in front of these curtains where the air-conditioning unit was, but no matter what we did with the air-conditioning thermostat on the wall it did its own thing. The bathroom was quite a nice decent size with a very big shower plenty of hot water and a decent pressure there was even a small shelf where you could put your own toiletries on they did supply a shampoo and a shower gel and also hand sanitiser at the sink which was a double sink or I should say two taps with a very large opening for the sink. The bed had two large pillows and one small one all of a decent quality and not like the ones in other hotels where you look at them and they just deflate we both had decent night sleep on both nights. The receptionist on our booking did advise that the following day was a national day similar to our bank holidays where most things would be closed and a lot of the roads would be closed off due to the firework display in the evening and the huge crowds that they were expecting. Not that this is the hotel‘s fault but our first port of call on our full day in Brussels turned out to be closed even though we had got tickets for it and according to their website they were still open and you could buy tickets for that day as well so we were less impressed. We went off to our what would’ve been our afternoon port of call and spent a lot longer there which was the atomium. I tried to walk back but it was just too far so we ended up getting a taxi which was a nightmare as the roads were closed off. He had nowhere to go. He was just driving round trying to find a road to get back to our hotel in the end we just had to pull up got out and walked the rest of the way, which was not that far. We spent a quiet evening in the room catching up on our emails, etc and we could hear the fireworks going off outside, but unfortunately we couldn’t see them from our room. The next day we got up and went to reception, the same young lad was there again seemed completely Vague to what was going on but he did manage to take money off our credit card to pay for the city taxes and the car park. The hotel itself was very clean, very tidy and at the breakfast in the morning which were very substantial with a significant amount of food available all very nice all very tasty lots of fresh fruit different juices and the staff were constantly clearing tables, cleaning them and replenishing them with fresh cutlery and serviettes nothing stayed dirty and unclean for long. Our room was clean dust free and the room service was completed on our day in the city with fresh with fresh towels beds made and generally tidied, empty bins etc, as they do. The only issue we had was on the evening of day one when we got there my better half had to go down to the car to get some drinks that we’ve got in the back of the car, and I went and had a shower unfortunately when he got back, he couldn’t get in the room no matter what he tried the key cards would not work so he tried to bang on the door, but I was in the shower so he went back down to the reception to get a new key card. He tried that new key card and again nothing by which time I was out and let him in the next morning we tried again and again nothing so we got all of our bits and pieces that we needed for the day to make sure that we’ve got them and then we went down to reception and mentioned it, that turns out that the batteries on the door mechanism had run out and they would send somebody to change those batteries and the key card worked perfectly after that so that was our only issue really for the whole hotel. When we left the hotel all the roads had already been reopened so it was easy to get out of time we would consider staying at this hotel again but not if they’re going to charge €45 a night to park that is just blatantly stupid. Also some of their prices for the food and the drink that they sell in the reception area is just ridiculous nearly €8 for a premade sandwich is way too expensive.
