We stayed at Boar's Head for a 2nd time as a family. We visited to experience the resort and to visit Monticello. My son (10 yo) recently got into golf, and he played The Nest course which was really accessible for him. The golf shop employees were wonderful. We also had a great time at the pool. We ate at the Birdwood Mansion which was an incredible experience. Food and service were outstanding and we were so impressed with Chef Abby Duck who came to our table to check on us.

Exceptional service, including a very thorough, traditional, nightly turn down service. Highlights and notations below: Highlights: 1) This is the perfect getaway for a young family looking for that "resort" pool in C'ville to keep their kids entertained and walking trails to burn off excess energy 2) After recently staying at a contactless hotel that told me they'd make an "exception" to come fill an empty bodywash bottle in the shower on arrival, the service level across Boars Head felt indulgent and Disneyesque. Rooms are serviced twice per day (cleaning, turn-down). Everyone was exceptionally friendly. 3) Mill Room is a solid, fairly priced dining experience 4) Ednam Hall (across from the main inn) is a quiet respite with large balconies perfect for sipping coffee and reading a book. I would stay here (over the main inn) again. 5) Check the UVA calendar against the weekend you are booking. Most issues seem to stem from capacity issues. I believe a "nonpeak" weekend is what made our stay so enjoyable. Things to know: 1) We've stayed in Charlottesville and surrounding areas many times. Price point here is sub 3, just over. Once you cross to 4-5 a night, you'll want to consider different options. 2) I don't mind a historical inn with charm. There is indeed an odor in the main inn stairwells and hallways (reinforced when we went to the coffee machine on the 2nd floor each day for a custom cup). I feel for management--I don't know what it is. See above--stay in Ednam Hall. 3) The resort pool and fitness center is a local country club that is also used by the Boar's Head guests. We had a wonderful experience day 1 (busy, but chairs were available). Day 2 (90 degrees, everyone understandably wanted to swim), there weren't chairs at the spa pool or resort pool available. We waited two hours to allow crowds to die down and missed the opportunity to swim shortly after arrival when a storm rolled in. There are capacity issues here management hasn't sorted--Perfect on a nonpeak weekend. Difficult as a guest when overcrowded. Arrive early in the day if this is your main reason for selecting Boar's Head for your stay.

“Nice stop on the way to Charleston”

Nice resort with friendly staff and decent food at the Mill Room. Rackets facilities are a plus. Would be nice if there was food at the adult only pool.

We just finished staying here for the weekend while my husband attended a conference. The same problems have continued over the past two summers. The A/C in the rooms can not keep up in hot weather (as many others have said) and everything is really tired in the main lobby and rooms (popped ottoman buttons, stained upholstery). It is also too pet friendly ( it is one thing to have large dogs in a patio room but one was placed in a second floor room in the main building). However, the largest problem is that the resort sells memberships to locals and they completely overrun the resort on weekends leaving nothing for paying guests. This is the worst in the adults only spa pool. There are only 4 umbrellas for 30 chairs and cabanas are reserved until 12:30 (which in more than 3 summers I have never seen anyone pay for) which is a waste of seating. The resort allows outside food and beverage so locals roll in with their coolers and food and stay all day and resort paying guests are out of luck. Spa guests are also allowed to use the pool so a group of 12 local women celebrating a bachelorette spa day marked chairs all day as they rotated in and out of having spa services. I know this from other summers so I got there right when the pool opened, but other guests were livid they were paying to stay at a resort overrun by the locals. The resort needs more umbrellas and seating (no one wants the round tables so take them out and add more chairs) and to limit those with memberships access to the spa pool on summer weekends and not allow outside food and beverages. They overrun the bar and restaurant as well. I can't even imagine what it is like at the large family pool!
