I got a special deal on this room, 75 reais per night, that is about £10 (November 2021) which was an absolute bargain. The hotel staff speak no english, the room is a good size and clean. I had 402, it had a balcony, however it's situated next to Sao Joao Ave, so it's noisy 24/7 and Republica has many homeless people, so at first it's a bit concerning, but you get used to it and during the day it's fine, so many people around, at night time, just use some common sense. I'd stay there again even at the normal price of 150 reais a night. It's a good location base to see the city. Just learn a little bit of portuguese so you can communicate with staff.

When deciding to come here I was concerned about safety as solo traveller (female). But to be honest, have some common sense like not taking loads of cash out, or looking aimless as you dawdle down the street and you will be fine. I made a self imposed curfew of getting home by dark and as it happened I ended up at lovely family run cafe for my final Acai berry dessert just after dark around the corner from Praca Mesquita where it is situated. Luxury room had air con but a little noisy. Front staff nice but no English when i was there - Spanish could do you okay maybe. Few strange noises outside 8 floors below at night but hey it is the city and when you are tucked up in a fairly comfortable bed, have a clean bathroom that is very spacious, and breakfast the next day that included fruit !! amongst the ham and cheese style, it was good value. Just don't expect modern decor in the hallways being renovated currently.
