We stayed here in May 2018. At the time , the street was undergoing rpairs, but a patient taxi driver was able to navigate an alternate route. This place is small, but charming and a short walk from the Tsarevets. Accommodation was great overlooking small river. A 5 minute walk down the street is the Hotel Gurko, where we had a great dinner and shared a table with travelers from New Zealand.

The Lion's Residence is a two-story guest house located overlooking the Monument of the Assens and looking across the valley towards the main downtown area of Veliko Turnovo. The facilities are very nice--the house must have been completely refurbished in the last year or so. The highlight is definitely the gorgeous balcony on the first floor providing an excellent outdoor space for the morning and evening. Also downstairs is a good-size master suite. Upstairs are two bedrooms (one smaller, the other a very good size) a brand new bathroom with shampoos and soaps provided, and a small dining room. Overall, the space works very well for families or a group of friends. If you were splitting it with strangers, I would hesitate because there oddly is no door on the bedroom on the first floor, so anyone passing through to the excellent balcony necessarily has full access into the master suite. The location is pretty good for Veliko Turnovo, a bit off the main area down a narrow cobblestone street. But it is a fairly easy walk, provided you do not need a cane or have a stroller (well, easy accounting for Veliko Turnovo's hills!), to both the main street, the Monument of the Assens, and the always-impressive fortress of Tsarevets. We found only one restaurant immediately nearby the residence, but again, the main street and its restaurants and bars are a short walk (just be careful with the amount of rekiya you drink if you try to walk the cobblestones afterward). The staff taking care of the house were excellent. The housekeeper did not have much English, which was not an issue for me since I had my Bulgarian in-laws with me, but something that other English-only speakers should be aware of. Despite the language differences, she was extremely friendly and conscientious, and provided a very tasty breakfast each morning (including preparing crepes one morning and mekitsi (Bulgarian doughnuts) another that were delicious). Overall, this was an excellent location for our family, and easily fit my two in-laws, wife, toddler, baby, and myself. I recommend it for anyone looking for a more-laid back option in Veliko Turnovo than some of the bigger hotels.
