the sylvia hotel is old fashioned in a good way. the staff genuinely care about your stay and work hard to help you. the location is excellent in a number of ways- beautiful rooms overlooking english bay, very easy walking access to stanley park, as well as to nearby street with many restaurants. the room service is excellent as is the in house restaurant.

“relaxation by the sea”

Wonderful room, excellent service and the best restaurant around. We thoroughly enjoyed the location, ambiance, restaurant. Enjoying meals while looking out on the bay, walking along the seawall into Stanley Park, going on a horse and wagon ride.

Excellent location right on English Bay!! Checked in Early! All good. Parking is easy, dogs are welcome at no charge!! Room very clean, comfortable bed, street/bay view. Excellent location right on English Bay!! Checked in Early! All good. Parking is easy, dogs are welcome at no charge!! Room very clean, comfortable bed, street/bay view. Ambience here is genteel, this is an historic and welcoming hotel. The only drawback was the food we had in the restaurant. Service was fine. I had the seafood chowder (very little pieces of salmon, corn, carrots,) husband had chicken pot pie with tiny pieces of chicken. Both dishes were mostly the same pudding-like floury rue; disappointing. Calamari was ok, dredged with harissa spices. Here we are at iconic English Bay, love it. However someone needs to help with the chowder and pot pie recipes. In this West End neighborhood there are tonnes of choices, so we'll skip the restaurant for the rest of this trip. Although I have had good eggs Benedict here in the past.

I've stayed at the Sylvia several times over the years, mainly because it's a friend's absolute favourite when she comes to visit from out of town. So I'll stay there too for a couple nights. I would normally probably provide 4-5 stars given The Sylvia's friendly vibe and unique history and fabulous location, but this time it was an accumulation of small annoyances that led me to giving only 3 stars. 1. The room. It didn't have some of the same features as others I've been given. There was a definite odd smell to it--not mouldy or mildewy, exactly, just weird, unsettling and off putting. Underfoot was spongier than usual, it felt like the carpet was hiding things best left hidden. 2. The meals. I'll provide one example (there were more). I ordered the Pork Belly and Scallops at the restaurant for dinner. It was delicious, but I will say they took liberty with the plural "Scallops". Technically they were correct to suggest the plate would have more than one scallop, but just barely. Guess how many scallops there were. Two. Two! Normally I love The Sylvia as an iconic unique gem of old Vancouver, their (mostly) friendly staff, excellent location, and decent rooms, but now I only love it because I get to spend time with my friends.
