My husband and I stayed 3 nights in a Deluxe Room River View King Bed room while my mother stayed 4 nights. We had a wonderful time at this hotel. First, the front desk reception staff were exceptional. We checked in with a staff member named YB Lin; he was professional and friendly, and helped us with our requests throughout the few days we were there. It was amazing that each time, he remembered our names and room numbers. Second, our river view room was beautiful. Huge size, great layout, lots of storage and wonderful view. Loved it. Third, the housekeeping staff assigned to our floor was fantastic. She was responsive to our requests (for example, we asked for 2 extra bottles of water on our 1st day and on the following days, she had 2 extra bottles of water on our desks without us asking). Small details but made my day ;) Lastly, I love the location -- this hotel is away from all the hustle and bustle of Guangzhou. Shamian island is perfect for a quiet morning jog or quiet evening stroll.

Among Guangzhou’s three legendary hotels, the White Swan Hotel Guangzhou enjoys the highest prestige. Not only was it China’s first five-star joint venture hotel, but it also stands as a milestone in the development of the country’s modern hospitality industry. Since opening in 1983, the White Swan has hosted numerous foreign heads of state, political figures, and international celebrities. With its open attitude and exceptional service, it once showed the world a China that was embracing the globe. The White Swan Hotel is a highly symbolic building in China’s reform and opening-up process. It officially opened on February 6, 1983, and was not only the first to be completed among the earliest batch of Sino-foreign joint venture hotels, but also pioneered many firsts in China’s modern hotel industry. Like the China Hotel and the Garden Hotel, it adopted the BOT model. It was built through a partnership between the patriotic Hong Kong businessman Henry Fok and the Guangdong provincial government. Henry Fok and Peng Guozhen invested HK50 million and HK12.5 million respectively, making it the first five-star joint venture hotel in mainland China, as well as the first large-scale modern hotel entirely designed, constructed, and managed by Chinese professionals. During the initial site selection phase, Guangzhou offered three potential locations, Elephant Hill, the area opposite Baiyun Hotel, and the shore of Liuhua Lake on Renmin North Road. However, after inspecting the sites in person, Henry Fok favored a barren tidal flat on the south side of Shamian Island. He was drawn to the open riverside view, the shimmering Pearl River, and the strong European atmosphere of Shamian Island on the opposite bank, where history and nature intertwined. More importantly, he proposed using then-advanced land reclamation technology from Hong Kong to enclose a section of the river, fill it with soil, and build the hotel over the water. This approach avoided occupying any land on Shamian Island while preserving its historical character to the greatest extent. The White Swan Hotel was ultimately built on the south bank of Shamian Island, facing the century-old former concession across the river. Its iconic atrium, named “Hometown Water,” channels water from the Pearl River indoors. With cascading waterfalls and flowing streams, the Lingnan garden style blends seamlessly with modern architectural language, creating a classic scene cherished by many. Since its opening, the White Swan quickly became an important stage for state diplomacy and high-end receptions. In 1986, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom made a historic state visit to China, marking the first time a British monarch had set foot on mainland China. Former U.S. President Richard Nixon stayed at the hotel twice, in 1985 and 1993. In 1985, then U.S. Vice President George H. W. Bush and his wife also chose the White Swan Hotel as their accommodation in Guangzhou. It is also worth noting that in 1985, the White Swan Hotel officially joined The Leading Hotels of the World, becoming the first Chinese member and opening the first window for China’s hotel industry to the global luxury market. At the same time, the hotel’s international influence quickly translated into diplomatic and business clustering effects. Its attached office building soon attracted consular offices from several countries. The U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou, which had established a presence on Shamian Island a century earlier, chose to return to the banks of the White Swan Bay after years of relocation, setting up its office in the hotel’s annex. Subsequently, the consulates of France, Germany, Thailand, the Philippines, and other countries also moved in, making the area around the White Swan an important node for Guangzhou’s foreign-related affairs and international exchanges once again. After forty years, the architecture of the White Swan Hotel remains as captivating as ever. Its pure white facade is simple, serene, and dignified, easily recognizable from across the Pearl River. This composed elegance and restrained grace allow it to stand out on the skyline, quiet yet impossible to ignore. Rather than cutting off history, the hotel’s construction continued the legacy of Shamian Island as a key commercial port in modern Guangzhou. Particularly valuable is the fact that from its opening, the White Swan implemented an “open door” policy, allowing ordinary citizens to freely enter the lobby, enjoy the views, and have tea. This completely broke down the mystique of high-end hotels as inaccessible, making the fruits of reform and opening-up something people could actually see and experience. It became a highly symbolic snapshot of that era. To enhance this prestigious experience, the hotel also built an elevated driveway directly from the main road to the lobby entrance, leading straight into the heart of the hotel. The White Swan Hotel occupies over 30,000 square meters, with a total floor area of 110,000 square meters. Its main building stands 28 stories high. When first built, it had 843 guest rooms and 30 dining spaces of various sizes. The design was led by Lingnan architectural masters Mo Bozhi and She Junnan, guided by the principle of “Western outside, Chinese inside.” The exterior adopts a clean, modern style that blends with the urban skyline across the Pearl River. The interior, however, is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics, emphasizing Chinese decor, layout, and artistic atmosphere. The most renowned feature inside the White Swan is the atrium waterfall named “Hometown Water.” Water cascades from above, accompanied by the soothing sound of flowing streams, set among scattered bluestones and lush greenery, evoking the lyrical charm of a Lingnan garden. This uniquely captivating scene is not only the soul of the hotel but has also become part of the city’s memory, an essential landmark for tourists in the Shamian area. Countless visitors make a special trip just to pause for a moment and feel the presence of this “hometown water.” Over the past forty years, the White Swan Hotel and Shamian Island have together witnessed Guangzhou’s remarkable journey from a Lingnan trading port to an international metropolis. Standing side by side, one historic and serene, the other modern and dynamic, they embody the pioneering spirit of the early reform and opening-up era and have become an integral part of the city’s cultural identity.

We stayed in The White Swan Hotel more than 13 nights (on multiple occasions) and have also stayed in various good A/PAC 5-star hotels (The Imperial of Connaught in New Delhi, Raffles of Singapore, SwissHotel Stamford of Singapore, Marina Bay Sands of Singapore, Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Mandarin Oriental in KL for example). The White Swan Hotel of Shamian Island Guangzhou - is one of the best in S/E Asia and A/PAC in our humble opinion and very, very highly recommended for its (1) modern big rooms and amenities (2) highly experienced and professional management (Chris - duty and/or senior manager of over 20 years’ experience) (3) exemplary service delivery and friendly attitude by various staff and consistently great interactions in many /all departments (4) great to world class quality food in all its various restaurants including the daily buffet breakfast (5) All the staff are well trained, experienced and knowledgeable, helpful and are fun to interact with (and most speak English). Several other people who travel extensively throughout south east Asia - (including a Sydney Double Bay barrister and his wife ) - have voted this hotel to be one of the best in south east Asia . Credits and kudos go to: Chris (senior manager or duty manager who manages the hotel professionally and is fluent in English), the two Alans in the concierge department, Henry and Johnson in the concierge department, Mr Liang (head chef in the breakfast buffet and Sherry in the buffet front desk. There are too many others who deserve a mention but you get the idea…. Examples of why we recommend White Swan Hotel include; stunning views of the 2,400km Pearl River, housekeeping staff well trained to pick up lost glasses fallen into bed crevices (shows they clean thoroughly) and return to guests, bed turn down services for goose feather quilts, large 60m2 deluxe rooms, large outdoor heated pool & nearby indoor two level modern gym and sauna . Wide variety of food in buffet breakfast including smoked duck breast and lunch desserts of fresh ginger juice curds with fresh water buffalo milk curd. The Chinese restaurants and yum cha dishes are of exemplary standard- try the chef served Cha Siew pork (served and cooked at table with crepe Suzette flames style presentation) , the fried glutinous rice dish with fresh pine nuts. For free, you can also watch the morning river distance swimmers battle incredibly against the current from the long extensive windows as you add more calories at breakfast and wonder if you have the energy to walk to the fresh yoghurt area. For novelty, let your kids (or bigger kids) try using the bidet attachments on some of the bathroom’s western style toilets. Highly recommend the white swan hotel. We will be going back there whenever we are in Guangzhou.

Property in general is well maintained and the housekeeper on 10/F escorted us to our room (1009) when checking in and he has demonstrated service excellence. However, there are shortfalls that require immediate attention like the malfunction room control panel which is on the right side facing the river. The male lavatory on 1/F behind the shops need routine upkeep and cleaning as I was indeed upset to see large pond of urine lie in front of the urinal and the quantity has probably accumulated for days without cleaning.
