This is a brand new Holiday Inn and so it's pretty much what you would expect. Large, clean, spacious, modern 3 restaurants -Chinese, buffet, a la carte T-shop with cakes Fast reliable wifi Pool and gym TV with CNN and Discovery Channel and a single english film channel Kettle and fridge, and coffee/creamer as well as tea Bathrobes Was mostly quiet Good a/c Some staff spoke english. All friendly and willing to help Why 4*? Chinese restaurant - wanted a small helping of rice. Got given an enormous bowl and them charged 38Y for it Thai prawn curry - had to hand shell the prawns whilst they were covered in sauce, and the black body thread hadn't been fully removed from them Beer was expensive - 28Y a small can, and soft drinks were the same price! It's a bit out of town centre Publicity inside talks about the neighbouring shopping mall but that won't be open for months Lighting switches in room too bloody complicated The muzak on very short loop in the lifts was really creepy, especially when the lift was coming or even passing by your floor

We are family of 4 with two young children. Checked in end of March and staying for 9 days. During our stay, we have contacted front desk services/manager at least 4 times (different days ) regarding the air conditioning wasn't working - we set the temperature in between 18 (lowest) to 22, however the actual room temperature would only stay in between 23.5 - 24.5. In fact it feels warmer than the 24.5 temperature so we really doubt if the temperature shown in the room air con is accurate. All of us felt suffocating and lack of air. When those nights thar the air condition being turned off, we sweat throughout the nights and we couldn't rest and sleep well. The process and attempts to get this sorted have caused so much stress to us. The Solution being offered to us by the manager: Adjusting the air con temperature in their central room numerous times. However it only lasted for one / two days then the air con was turned off by the hotel central control room. So only air comes out. Not 'cool at all. Once the manager did offer us to change room but the other room has the 'same issue '. Then we were given a fan - yes, at least a fan, but where is the standard of a 4 stars hotel? Even a 3 stars hotel has a good and steady air conditioning system. The hotel staff all encouraged us to open the window. This is a funny one, as much as I adore fresh air but the city of Shao Guan in early of April is in highly humid environment. The raining is pretty much non stop for days, sometimes weeks, so they prefer more humidity and wetness in the room. With children running around and we stayed at 10th floor hotel, this is not a safe and wise suggestion. We appreciate your refreshment (offering us fresh food and snack platters), however these doesn't help cooling the room down. To my understanding and have stayed in the hotels for over 7 days, the hotel is 'saving cost' by turning off the air conditioning. According to the management, because outside temperature is colder so they can turn off the central air conditioning and expect customers to open the window to get 'fresh colder air'. We do satisfy with the housekeeping services. They are always efficient and friendly. We have only asked them to come in every alternative day to clean the bathroom, the floor outside the bathroom and refilling the water and coffee. Swimming pool is clean and not overcrowded. Almost everyday we went for a swim, somedays we used twice. Once my husband needed assistance at the pool desk, staff kindly offered help. Buffet breakfast - not much changes each day but still have reasonable choices. I enjoy the freshly cooked porridge with meat/ingredients of my choice. Laundry services is way over priced compared to many countries/hotels we have stayed in the past. But we have no choice but sent two bags of laundry for washing. Nearby attractions - memo mall city is a big shopping centre and has 6 levels. Level 5&6 are food courts. Level 3 is children's 'paradise'. Each day we chose different play shop for kids. Prises is reasonable, each entry for each kid is range from RMB 58-88. Entry ticket is for whole day and can reenter as many times you like on the same day. There's plenty of other shops nearby and surrounded the Memo mall city. We have never come across with a hotel or resort that will turn off their central air conditioning in regards of the weather.
