“Shenzhen’s JW Marriott Hotels Are Quite Interesting”

As the title says, both JW Marriott hotels in Shenzhen are rather intriguing. The Chinese name of the first property, Jinmao JW Marriott Shenzhen, is currently the only JW Marriott in China that places the owner’s name before the city. Meanwhile, the JW Marriott Shenzhen Bao'an, which we’re discussing today, features a main building and a separate wing located about one kilometer apart. This dual-core setup is the first of its kind among JW Marriott hotels in China, which makes it quite novel. The main building was completed in 2015, while the second phase, known as the Light Wing, opened in 2022. Though the two structures are separate, they share the same coastal surroundings. Both are close to attractions like Happy Harbor, the Bay Area Light Ferris Wheel, the Coastal Arts Center, and the Bay Area Eye, and are not far from Tencent’s Dachan Bay. It is worth noting that the distance between the main building and the Light Wing is about one kilometer, so be sure to confirm your booking details in advance. The main building was designed by architect John Portman, and the interior design of both towers was handled by HBA, drawing inspiration from maritime culture. However, the overall impression still carries the distinct corporate flair typical of JW Marriott. After the Glory Tower opened in 2022, the total room inventory of JW Marriott Shenzhen Bao'an expanded to 463 rooms, apartments, and suites. The Main Tower offers 356 rooms and suites, with the base room size around 43 square meters, designed in the mainstream business aesthetic of 2015. Although referred to as the hotel’s second phase, the Glory Tower was actually converted from OCT’s unsold apartments. While it carries the JW Marriott name, it operates with a high degree of independence, featuring its own front desk, all-day dining restaurant, executive lounge, fitness center, and banquet hall. It can almost be considered a fully independent hotel. To be honest, this visit only included the Main Tower of JW Marriott Shenzhen Bao'an. Given the current pressures on the hotel industry and the challenges faced by owner OCT, I believe the hotel has done its best in terms of maintenance and service. For a property that has been operating for ten years, it maintains a fairly good standard. Both the cleanliness of public areas and the condition of the rooms are noticeably better than those of other business hotels that opened around the same time, such as the JW Marriott Chongqing and the JW Marriott Chengdu. However, if you’re looking for a city resort experience, the main building of this JW Marriott still feels quite corporate. In comparison, neighboring hotels like the St. Regis or Conrad are more attractive in terms of design and vacation ambiance. But for a short business stay, this JW Marriott’s convenient location makes it a practical and reliable choice. Next year, Shenzhen will welcome its third JW Marriott. This will make Shenzhen the second city in China to have three JW Marriott hotels. As part of the Huafa Snow World, JW Marriott Shenzhen Qianhai’s interiors are designed by CCD, with plans for 352 rooms and suites. Its biggest highlight is that guests can enter the indoor ski resort directly through a dedicated ski equipment hall, making it the first JW Marriott in China to offer true ski-in, ski-out access. With this, Shenzhen’s three JW Marriott hotels each present a distinct character. Jinmao stands out with its owner’s name in the title, Bao'an takes an unconventional approach with its main building and wing separated by a kilometer, and the upcoming Snow World blazes a new trail with its ski theme and functional integration. Though they share the same brand, each interprets the boundaries of JW Marriott in its own way, adding a touch of just the right kind of interesting charm.
