The Holland Hotel in Shanghai, China is a great value and very clean with very helpful staff. Most of the staff can speak English so that is a good thing. The maids are very helpful and go out of their way to assist you with any room needs. The rooms are clean and reasonable in price. We did select this hotel as it is close to my friends apartment and just a few blocks from a nice new mall for food and shopping. It is also 3 blocks from a local tea shopping mall so if your looking for great deals on tea and tea accessories this is a good location. They do have a good security system with guards and you need to have a room key to go up the elevator. The only negative I can say about this hotel is that the food for breakfast is not that great so I would suggest going to one of the local shops nearby for breakfast. The local Chinese seemed to like the food there. I would also stay away from the 3rd floor rooms as the breakfast room is there and you do get some "cooking smells" at times. Cute little room. A little pricey for what it is. Breakfast is included with the deluxe rooms. Breakfast is typical chinese food. Sadly, no American nor fresh fruits as an option. Staff at reception is not polite and ignores you if you don't approach them and engage. They will.seriously just leave you waiting there. Rooms where clean. Robes are not.provided even though it says it comes with robes. Bathroom was 2/5. Shower doors don't close completely and there's a wall window in which you can be seen from bed room.

“Foreign hotel name yet pretty local”

I slipped into my hotel room at night as I did not want to wake up my room-mate. The huge picture of Netherland scenery in the room caught my attention. It did well match the hotel name - Holland Hotel. It was only the next morning did I know that the blind of the washroom's transparent glass could be pulled up. It’s so called “lover’s room”. Goosh! I forgot to pull it down when I went to the toilet in the morning. Fortunately the office opposite our room was close and vacant in weekend. There is design problem of the washroom’s toilet paper holder. Its position is so low that it causes inconvenience to the user. The breakfast didn’t look very tempting as it didn’t have many choices and mainly catered local food.
