The Xianheng Hotel

“Beautiful and newly renovated!”

I stayed for one night at the Xianheng Hotel. They have renovated it and the rooms are super big and modern with a taste of old traditional flavor. I stayed in room 6111 which is a first floor room but still very nice and quite. Very clean and comfy!

The hotel is located in the heart of the old city-- on a brick paved road adjacent to the main pedestrian zone surrounding the Lu Xun site. Shaoxing is not a very big town, and staying here will put you close to most of the main sights, as well as good restaurants and shopping. The hotel itself is nice-- wide halls, traditional architecture-- it's got flair. The grounds are characterized by water features replete with koi, pavilions, and concrete walkways. Perhaps a bit sanitized but at least they are trying. We got a standard room with two doubles which was quite large. Bathroom featured a shower plus a separate large bath. Our window looked out over the water features. In room fridge and tea set. We were there in the dead of winter but the hotel (halls and room) were always warm and toasty. The breakfast buffer was ok by chinese standards. I've come to learn you can't expect much. The chinese restaurant attached to the hotel is a major draw to the local community. It's set up in traditional chinese style, which can be quite confusing if you don't speak the language. You put a certain amount of money down and receive a card to purchase food at the counter. After a wait, you pick up the food and take it to your table. It gets crowded so this can be frustrating if you are not assertive. But the food is great and the whole place is an experience. Some tips for the area are to avoid the gaggle of pedicabs which patrol the front of the hotel. They will offer to take you to this or that attraction, but instead will take you to a place where you will be pressured to purchase a tour of around a dozen small attractions which are likely of little interest. Do take the canal boat tour which goes to Shen Yuan garden, and take a taxi out to Lan Ting. Ta Shan park and pagoda is only a couple blocks away and gives a nice view of the city.

Went to Shaoxing for weekend. The main attraction is of course, Luxun and the famed Old Xianheng Restaurant. It made sense then, to stay at this hotel. It basically packed everything Shaoxing has to offer in one place. Location couldn't be better for a Luxun themed tour. Right across the street is the Wupeng Boat Quay that will take you directly to Sanweishuwu or Shen Garden which are the main attractions of this area. The old Xianheng itself is a place of interest, appearing several times in some of Luxun's best known novels. The flavored beans and Taidiao rice wine from the restaurant are very fine examples of local cuisine. Like them or not -- they preserve the ancient flavor rather well. The hotel itself is well maintained and the small garden behind the lobby is very beautiful. The "themed suite" room (upgraded from a standard suite and is a corner room) felt a little dated but meets our needs. Outside the window is Shaoxing's old town and it felt very authentic. Amenities were of Xianheng's own brand and were of rather decent quality. The executive lounge were not exactly what you'd expect from a 5* and you can only use it one time per day -- rather strange but then again, was OK. Would expect a little more for the executive floor though. Also you'll need to walk a little bit if you live in Block 6/8 -- I'd ask for a room in Block 5 next time (also facing the out-door garden). There's a very good Sauna/Spa area (would be great if you visit the area in Winter) but sadly no pool -- would be perfect if they build one. Breakfast is good with their Chinese section and a bit weak in the Western department -- perfectly understandable. All staff were well-trained and professional. Didn't have any issue with that. I think you'd be much happier to expect it to be a nice four-star boutique instead of a 5* luxury -- but then the price is just right for what you get. I definitely enjoyed my time there.

Chinese 5 stars hotel. Good management, very clean and good staff. Much better than same international level. But no international Chanel TV accept CNN. Breakfast was great but for 5 stars we expect some croissants. Check in and check out very efficient and quick.
