We completed an island hopping Yasawa trip staying at Boat House Nanuya, Coralview and Barefoot Manta. Our priority was marine life snorkelling, beach access and swimming and good food - as well as clean and comfortable accommodation. Coralview was our second stop. We had a great time there for 2 nights. We saw giant clams, a large shark (reef shark) and a turtle as highlights but also lots of great reef fish and coral. The weather was poor on our visit so we couldn’t make use of the guided snorkel trips on offer - everything was just from the main resort reef. The reef is in a reserve so after talking to other guests it sounds like the quality is really high and it is in great condition, just unfortunate we only got to see about 200m of it. Rooms were great and recently renovated. The common area is more basic and being renovated. The staff were great and really helpful and friendly. Coralview is a great pick for a comfortable stay at a good value point, with all the extras on offer if you wish to use them (massages, boat trips, sunset cruises etc). Staff were all very nice and very friendly/helpful.

“Coral Reefs, Community and a Genuine ‘Bula’ Welcome”

I stayed at Coralview Island Resort for 17 nights over two visits within a month — once in April during Cyclone Vaianu, then again in May, flying back to Sydney in between. Although I have travelled extensively, I had never visited the Pacific Islands before. I came to slow down and focus on snorkelling and underwater photography rather than scuba diving. The Yasawa Islands are stunning — reef-fringed with colourful coral and fish. Each volcanic island has its own character, resorts, homestays and activities, and Tavewa Island is no exception. The Tavewa Seabus from Lautoka Jetty takes around three hours depending on weather and island drop-offs and cost 150 FJD each way at the time of my visit. Vibrant soft and hard corals, schools of parrotfish, clownfish and angelfish, giant clams and two sleeping white-tip reef sharks revealed an underwater environment teeming with marine life. Accommodation is mid-range, with ocean or garden-view bures (wood or straw huts/cabins). Air conditioning and hot water are unavailable, so those seeking more modern comforts may prefer another resort. Complimentary shampoo, conditioner and soap are provided, and rooms are cleaned regularly. Wi-Fi is only available in communal areas, although solar power means electricity is sometimes unavailable in the bures. While functional, some of the communal bathroom facilities near the dining area would benefit from continued maintenance and investment. For reliable connection throughout the resort, I found a Fiji SIM and Tourist Plan essential, with Vodafone coverage remaining strong throughout my stay. On the outer islands there are no cars or motorbikes, only boats, meaning food and fuel arrive regularly from the mainland. Like many Yasawa resorts, Coralview has a mandatory meal plan of 110 FJD per person per day covering breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The food is mostly western style with generous portions and set mealtimes, which naturally create opportunities to meet other travellers. Livai, one of the bartenders/waiters, immediately invited me to join a table of solo travellers on my first night, which set the tone for both stays. Having spoken to other travellers, many of us felt a weekly or monthly Fiji Dinner Night would work well. A communal meal centred on local dishes such as Ika Vakalolo (fish poached in coconut milk), Fish Suruwa (spiced coconut fish curry), or a lovo feast cooked in a traditional underground earth oven, accompanied by singing and guitar playing, would reflect the Fijian emphasis on community while bringing travellers together. Given the exceptional singing voices we heard during our stay, it could become a memorable part of the experience. Reef hopping, fishing trips, visits to the Blue Lagoon and the Sawa-i-Lau caves were among the highlights, particularly the underwater swim between the two limestone caverns. Staff including Toki, the activities guide, guitar player and boat driver, whose knowledge of the reefs, culture and islands added enormously to the stay, and Douggie, who free-dived to point out a hidden octopus with only one visible eye, helped shape many of these experiences. Basket weaving, coconut demonstrations, sunset hikes and easy access to the house reef are also included. What stayed with me most was not just the turquoise lagoons, sunsets and green peaks, but the joyful ‘Bula’ welcome and the warmth and humour of the staff. I have rarely encountered so much spontaneous laughter and playfulness. Staff remembered your name, frangipani flowers were tucked behind ears, and the resort dogs Lady and Skipper wandered among chickens and chicks around the grounds. I sat with staff during the local pastor’s weekly visit, tried kava for the first time, and gathered around a large beach bonfire beneath the stars — all of which contributed to a strong sense of community that stayed with me long after leaving. When I developed an infected coral cut, Lote from front-of-house gave me betadine and plasters and regularly checked in on me. The owner, Don, is fortunate to have a remarkable team who work extremely hard every day to create that atmosphere — receptionists, groundsmen, housekeepers, bartenders/waiters, activity staff and chefs/cooks alike. They all deserve recognition: Lote, Livai, Toki, Sam, Kams, Nasoni, Kaveli, Maciu, Mala, Jale, Jou, Kelera, Yaya, Adi, Ako, Makelesi, Teca and Matelita. Departing guests are bid farewell with a moving rendition of the Fijian song ‘Isa Lei’. I left knowing I would return.

“You get what you pay for and more”

It’s definitely the cheapest place I found in this luxury island group that offers dorms if you want it but even your own villa for the price of what you would pay for a normal accommodation on the main island. It’s definitely the cheapest place I found in this luxury island group that offers dorms if you want it but even your own villa for the price of what you would pay for a normal accommodation on the main island. That alone is impressive, there will sometimes be bugs in the villas and the usual nature stuff, and that’s to be expected at this price range and really just on a small tropical island at night. The staff are the friendliest i have ever stayed in a resort and do their best to make you feel like you are getting a luxurious accommodation. When I got sick they gave me free medicine, and they offer a bunch of fun activities all you need perfect for about a 5 stay. I will remember this place for a long time for sure, I don’t know if I will be back in Fiji for another 15 years at least but I’m sure I’ll be back some day. No wifi outside of the lobby area can be a bit annoying but the wifi is pretty good in the area they have
