I have mixed feelings about my stay at Hotel Josephine. The room was comfortable, the location was excellent, and the staff were generally pleasant. Unfortunately, a serious incident during our departure overshadowed an otherwise enjoyable stay. The evening before our departure, we informed hotel staff that we would be leaving at approximately 5:15 a.m. to catch a 6:08 a.m. international train to Warsaw. We were told to leave our room key in the room and were assured that exiting the hotel would not be a problem. However, when we attempted to leave, we found ourselves unable to get out of the building. We had already left our key in the room, following staff instructions. We woke two guests from another room for assistance, and their key also failed to open the door. We missed our scheduled Uber while trying to find a way out and spent valuable time searching for help. There was no clearly visible emergency contact information near the exit and no obvious instructions on what to do if guests were unable to leave the building. Eventually, we had to use the elevator emergency button to get assistance. The hotel's response afterward focused on explaining its procedures and stating that the system was functioning correctly. However, that does not change the fact that multiple guests were unable to exit the building when they needed to. The hotel also suggested using a key-return box, but no such option was explained to us, and we had specifically been instructed to leave our key in the room. Most disappointing was the lack of meaningful compensation. The inconvenience involved a missed Uber, significant stress, and nearly missing an international train to another country. The only compensation offered was a voucher for a future stay at one of their properties, which is of little value to travelers with no plans to return. I hope the hotel improves its early check-out procedures, posts highly visible emergency contact information near exits, and ensures that guests are never placed in a similar situation again. Rating: The hotel itself was very nice, but guest safety and emergency procedures should never leave room for uncertainty.
