My husband and I really enjoyed our one night stay after cycling to the hotel from Cesky Krumlov as one of our recommended stops on a self-Biking tour. The hill up to the castle and hotel was a challenge, so we Felt treated to make use of all the hotels amenities: hot tub, swim/plunge pool, salt steam room and onsite restaurant. We also enjoyed the castle gardens only 300 ft away and had the place to ourselves walking around taking pictures of the castle at sunset. We had a romantic dinner onsite before sleeping pretty early as we had to check out and cycle again the next day. I thought the room and bed was comfortable enough, it is an older place, felt a little ‘shining’ like in the halls at night as was not very busy time, midweek. However, I slept well and the room had everything you need, robes, slippers, hair dryer, shower had good hot water pressure. I enjoyed opening up the classic windows and shutters to let the hilltop breeze in the room, we did not miss air conditioner. In the morning the hotel provided a breakfast, I’d say that was just average but I was happy to have it included for the convenience. I’d recommend this classic Hotel if you plan to visit the castle and if short on time like us, this was a perfect spot to stay.

Staying over the weekend. Booked a suite, wonderful view of the Castle. Evening private wellness was great, but you cannot get a glass of champagne, thexonly option is Bohemia Sekt. Staying over the weekend. Booked a suite, wonderful view of the Castle. Evening private wellness was great, but you cannot get a glass of champagne, thexonly option is Bohemia Sekt. This is what really shows the hotel is chasing for customers, mainly via discounted Slevomat vouchers. As well on the way to restaurant you need to pass a very shabby area with leather-like armchairs eith large holes. It's really a pity.

“Disappointing. Attic rooms not suited for use as a hotel room”

Breakfast was good as was most of the wellness (sauna was being renovated). Location good for the castle Room was in the attic - not as spacious as in room photos. As a result it had low ceilings which meant banging head numerous times. Room was dark - a small window with no view, looking onto a crumbling parapet wall. Room was hot, as under the roof, and had thin walls so you could hear neighbours showering. Despite booking.com saying there was a lift, this did not apply to the attic rooms so 32 steps to climb with luggage. Although wellness generally good, it was disorganised - no explanation that lockers and towels available. Party held in main courtyard (that most rooms overlook) until 1.00am.

Hotel Stekl is in a great location - basically right next door to the castle, which is apparently modelled on Windsor Castle in England. The entrance is on a private road and so you need a parking permit - which is not very clear until you check in. Check in was a bit slow and in general I'd say that customer service at the hotel was average-to-poor. For example the first time we dined in the restaurant, when I ordered they told me that the meal I ordered wasn't available: if there are items not available, why not tell people up-front rather than waiting until they're ready to order? Another issue with the restaurant is that the menu doesn't change: that means that if you're staying more than a few days, you're going to want to look elsewhere for dinner if you want some variety. The rooms are a good size, but somewhat dated in appearance and the lighting is flourescent, meaning they lack atmosphere which is a shame given the four-poster bed for example. The common areas of the hotel were cold, especially when people failed to close doors behind them (e.g. door to restaurant). The exterior doors are very large and noisy to close - one evening there was a lot of slamming as people didn't seem to bother to be very considerate to guests who might already be in bed. We also heard a very long argument between some guests in a neighbouring room so the insulation can't be very good. The spa facilities are pretty good - small pool, jacuzzi, private jacuzzi & sauna, gym. Again though it's odd that you would arrive in the spa and they don't offer you a towel or anything. Overall it's a good base of operations but they could make a lot more of the location.
