“Five stars is not enough!!”

My daughter and I stayed in this wonderful place end of May-earlyJune. The staff were so welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Nothing was too much for them even giving us a lift to the station themselves when the taxi didn’t turn up! Everything was spotless clean and there were all these cosy places to sit and chill out at every turn. No reprimands for turning up for delicious breakfast at 9:30 when they are supposed to close! No reprimands but just kindness from the staff. There were school children on a trip but the hostel is arranged so you don’t hear unnecessary noise. The location is excellent too. I cannot recommend it enough. It is worthy of more than five stars and the price is reasonable!!!!

“Great hostel close to city centre”

We stayed two nights in this youth hostel with our three kids (11, 9 and 1) in a family room, on our way to Sweden. Great location nearby the town centre, and close to grocery shops. Friendly and helpfull staff, two play rooms for kids and a extensive choice at the breakfast buffet. Basic but clean… more

“Clean, comfortable, quiet”

I wasn’t sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. We stayed in the “hotel” part of the hostel. I think this is very good value, especially considering the other options in the town. The room was very clean, comfortable, and quiet. Pretty basic in terms of decor/furnishings… but the beds were comfortable and that’s what matters! The Washroom is much more hostile than hotel, reminded me of summer camp or a dorm room. But it was private, and clean. There was only one chair for lounging, but that was fine for us since we were out walking around, enjoying the town/region, and eating some delicious meals in nearby restaurants. There is no elevator to the second floor where we stayed, so that might be an issue for some people. We had a room overlooking the canal, and the sun came in in the afternoon, it was quite beautiful. Although there was construction going on right outside our window by the looks of it, we were there on a weekend and weren’t bothered by it. Breakfast was Danish style, self serve. A variety of breads, meats, cheeses. Hard boiled eggs. Yoghurt and muesli. Juice, coffee and tea. Good value, worth what they charge. We were there on a weekend so parking was free. I noticed that the hostel rents bicycles, which I wish we had done.

First, the good: friendly staff, location about a five-minute walk from the centre of Ribe, and fast WiFi. Also, if we had been traveling with kids, then our experience would likely be different because the hostel had some fantastic options for families, including a playroom with a lot of toys and a room with a climbing wall and other activities that would be fun for older kids. There is also, at least on the weekends, parking that is free across the street (assuming you can find a spot). If you're young and used to hostels are traveling with kids, then this is probably a great option! But, if you are in your thirties and grouchy when you don't get a good night's sleep like us, then maybe pass on this place! Ribe is incredibly popular, and you might, like us, face the choice of either not staying in Ribe or taking the only room you can find at this hostel. If you are in doubt, don't stay in Ribe because I will tell you what we know now that we wish we'd known before: Ribe is very small, and you can see everything in a few hours, unless you want to go to both museums. Even then, if you arrived by 9 or 10, you could easily see all you want to see of Ribe and drive to another town to sleep. On why this hostel was not a great option for a couple not used to hostels: Our private room felt a lot like a college dorm, with painted brick walls and metal bunk beds. You have to pay an extra 75DKK per person if you want sheets and a towel--all told, we paid about 110 euro for the room, which felt like a lot for a really uncomfortable night. You can hear people pass by in the hallway. There is of course no air conditioning, so it was quite hot. The windows faced out to a courtyard where people were hanging out, which was loud. Even if we'd wanted to complain, there was no one to complain to because as far as we could see, the hostel has no staff on site after 8 pm. And the curtains were thin and didn't block either the light from the courtyard or, when it started to rise, the sun. Breakfast was included but pretty basic. If you are not used to staying in hostels, then you will probably share our experience, which is that we would have preferred to get a nicer room in a proper hotel for the same money in a smaller town down the road.
