First, the warning: Make sure you read the messages you get from Tallinn City Apartments and follow them explicitly. Don't make the mistake that I made initially which was to assume because I've traveled extensively I'd just look at the check-in instructions at the last minute and find my way. That didn't work (for me) because I quickly looked at the address, plugged that into my GPS and off I went from the airport. But, the address at the bottom of their e-mails is THE MAIN OFFICE address of Tallinn City Apartments, and they own the great majority of the rentals in this city so each rental has its own unique address and entry instructions. Once I was past my panic stage upon not being where I was supposed to be and trying to figure it all out as the sun began to set (and as my USA Verizon cell phone wasn't initially allowing my calls in Estonia; double-check your carrier and make certain they know you will travel to Estonia or Latvia as they might have blocks in those locations; mine did)....it ended up WONDERFUL. Toompea is the old neighborhood on top of the limestone hill where the Estonian Parliament is also located, and many small shops, restaurants...and, a very quiet evening experience. Just outside of our building which was located within the maze of small streets, alleys and walkways there were multiple areas overlooking the entire Old Towne area which provided for some stunning photographs. You could spend all day just in the area around the apartment, but you won't. There were also various walking routes to get down into the heart of Old Towne, each route taking you to a different entrance to the city and none of them taking longer than 10 minutes. The walk down into Old Towne was part of the adventure; great sights, shops, parks, etc. depending on which route you chose to take each time. The apartment itself was unequaled in my stays all around various European cities. It was exceptionally roomy, with a full kitchen area, full refrigerator & freezer, very large lounging area, 2 bedrooms each with a bathroom. The larger bedroom was huge, and the bathroom ensuite included the washer & dryer, a shower, separate jacuzzi-type tub...and a SAUNA. Yep, you read that correctly. The neighborhood was very quiet at night, so allowed for good sleeping and peaceful walks through the winding, crooked, cobblestone streets. From the windows in the apartment there were views of some of the small streets or the courtyard within the apartment building itself. In that courtyard is where you parked if you had a car (we did) and there was an electronic gate for entry which assured that your vehicle was safe. That courtyard was quite small for parking, so do bring your skills for maneuvering small spaces even in a small car. Very cute though! The key pick-up system was very efficient .... once you understood what was to happen. Again, you must read the instructions explicitly; they are well written, but only if you're in the correct place to begin with and follow every step. It's sort of magic actually; the keys just pop out of an electronic safe and you also return them upon departure into that same magic box. I'm sure we have similar systems in the U.S.A., but I don't remember ever experiencing one when checking into or out of a place of lodging. It's much more than just a keybox. Overall Tallin City Apartments Old Town Toompea (that's not just describing the location of the apartments, but that is also the actual NAME of this particular unit within Tallin City Apartments portfolio of hundreds of rooms in the city) was very comfortable, a convenient location, reasonably priced for the superb location in the Old Towne area, and a place I would stay again without hesitation. I would highly recommend this lodging if you're coming to Tallinn...so long as you can read and follow directions! ; )
