“Beautiful hotel on the water in the Heart of Helsinki”

I don't normally write reviews, but the Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4 in Helsinki deserves more love in these reviews. My wife and I just spent 11 nights at this hotel in April 2026. It is a spectacular new hotel built in 2024 on the water in the heart of Helsinki. The architecture is modern, sleek, comfortable, with beautiful Finnish wood everywhere you look. The daily included breakfast buffet was out of this world, a multitude of healthy hot and cold entrees, with lots and lots of little special extras like fresh honey comb, pureed health juices, multiple bread and butter options, fresh fruit, vegetables, etc etc all with morning views of the water and the Suomenlinna Ferry. The staff at the buffet and the front desk were always gracious, friendly and professional. The included Sauna was another highlight, another example of beautiful Finnish wood. There were two Sauna's, one in the men's locker room and one in the ladies locker room. My worry ahead of time was this waterfront hotel location too far from the central district, but those worries quickly went away day one. First, while Helsinki is a very walk-able city, the trams come in very handy. Just one block from the hotel is the Tram #4 line that gets you started everyday and also there is a full size grocery store on that same corner for any little things you might need. This was our first trip to Helsinki and Finland. A few tips, first as everyone says the public transit is just the best. Download the HSL app and your set. Some people said online ahead of time said the app works better if you just stay as a guest instead of setting up an account. So, we did that and that allowed us to purchase 3 day passes. The system runs on the honor system which to me just sets a daily tone of respect between the citizens and the govt. They do have random ticket checkers just to keep everybody honest and we saw them once in 11 days. Next we found the best food deal in Helsinki is many restaurants have a lunch buffet for $14 Euro's each, from Eckberg's to Finlandia Hall Cafe to Salve's and several others, you get a fantastic lunch special with lots of salad options and also coffee and desert included. Also there are several Food Halls, and each one was different but they were all a lot of fun to visit and try some Finnish food. Another great meal was dinner at Nokka's, just a five minute walk from the hotel. We took the Tallink Ferry to Tallin, Estonia for a day trip and also a bus to Porvoo for an afternoon. The lunch buffet in Porvoo at a place called Papa J's was one of our best experiences in Finland, find yourself Papa J's in Porvoo, you won't regret it. We walked all over Helsinki, waterfront everywhere, beautiful neighborhoods and districts, all with chilly cool breezes off the Baltic Sea. We went into the Baltic Sea twice on our two visits to Loyly Sauna, which also has to be a must for every visitor. So, go to Helsinki, stay at Pier 4 if you can, the Finnish people are wonderful and Helsinki is a very special place.

A week ago, when we were having breakfast at this hotel, most of the tables were empty because of the reserved sign, some even in the best window seats. Yesterday I asked the receptionist about the possibility of reserving a breakfast table for this morning, so I was quite surprised to hear that reservations are only possible for breakfast guests from outside the hotel. And since the hotel is completely full today, if necessary, they will open an additional room (a boring cabinet) to relieve the congestion. It shouldn't be like this: outsiders can reserve, for example, window tables facing the sea, and hotel guests sit wherever there is space, in the worst case, in the cabinet. The breakfast dishes were excellent.

“Poached gags cost €15”

We were upgraded to a sea view room only to then have a massive ferry park in front of the window!! They should have told us. Weird not having windows. Rooftop bar was great. Nice and central. Close to harbour. Room was clean and comfortable. Was charged for poached eggs!!! Very annoying.

“Nice new hotel with great rooftop terrace.”

A rather new Hotel in (forgive me Finns!) Scandinavian style with lots of natural accents. It is located at the Cruise/Ferry harbor and the magnificent rooftop terrace and bar provides with an excellent overview over the city. A rather new Hotel in (forgive me Finns!) Scandinavian style with lots of natural accents. It is located at the Cruise/Ferry harbor and the magnificent rooftop terrace and bar provides with an excellent overview over the city. From here it is an easy troll into the city center with plenty of shops and highlights. The harbor also provides day trips by boat to various destinations. Staff is very friendly and (naturally) fluent in English. The rooms are not very big but practical and have enough power access points including USB. Next to the Rooftop bar the hotel has a restaurant and a cafe in the lobby but be aware of opening hours as they are not all day through. The price/value rate is very good and the hotel is definitely recommendable.
