Even if it is not a luxury hotel, and it is not pretending to be, it is one of the most genuinely comfortable and welcoming places we have stayed at in the French Alps. Comfort, warmth and exceptional service are the three words we kept coming back to over the week. The hotel sits right in the heart of Avoriaz at 1,800m — its name pays tribute to the altitude — in a beautiful contemporary building by Morzine architect Hervé Marullaz, faced in silver-grey larch and traditional tavaillon, a respectful nod to the Avoriaz architectural code. The fireplace lounge, the bar, the sunny terrace, and the glass-fronted spa with its infinity pool and sauna all share the same understated, quietly elegant register: warm wood, soft fabrics, plenty of natural light, generous mountain views from every angle. You walk in and immediately feel the temperature drop — in the good sense. We stayed in two different rooms during the week, the hotel having proposed a mid-stay change to accommodate a booking adjustment, and both were excellent — though quite different in character. The duplex suite is the more spectacular of the two: spacious, with truly breathtaking views over the surrounding peaks, and a real sense of arriving somewhere special. The single caveat is the staircase between the main bedroom on the upper level and the rest of the suite — bathroom included — which is genuinely steep. For a quick trip during the night, or for anyone with mobility issues or very young children, that stair is something to be aware of before booking. It is not dangerous, but it is not a casual climb either. The reward, however, is a suite that feels almost like a small wooden cabin perched in the sky. The junior suite, where we spent the second half of the week, is a touch smaller but in some ways more practical: a bedroom with a closing door that separates it from the rest of the living space, which makes the suite feel genuinely intimate and gives parents real privacy when the children are settled. The balcony is generous and well-oriented, and the views are still very fine. For a family stay, we ended up preferring this layout for day-to-day comfort. The genuine highlight of MiL8, by some distance, is the people. Every single member of staff we encountered — reception, restaurant, spa, ski room, housekeeping — was warm, attentive, helpful, and visibly happy to be doing their job. Small requests were handled instantly and without fuss. The children were treated as actual guests rather than tolerated. After our recent experiences at some far more expensive five-star resorts, the contrast was, frankly, striking: MiL8 is a 4-star hotel that delivers on hospitality at a level much more expensive properties often miss entirely. Add to that a generous breakfast (with thoughtful options for various dietary preferences), a chic-brasserie kitchen that makes intelligent use of local Savoyard produce, ski-in/ski-out access at the door, and a spa that is exactly what one wants at the end of a day on the slopes, and you have a genuinely complete address. Not luxury, not pretending to be. Comfortable, beautifully run, and above all profoundly kind. We will be back.
