Having stopped overnight a La Jonquera and had an awful nights sleep due to a poor quality bed at least in this hotel the bed was comfortable thus the plus point to make it a three star rating!! The rooms are dated and the place needs money thrown at it to get it up to a reasonable standard. The shower was great, but the tiles were mouldy, the bed was fine but the room needs painting, the breakfast was fine but the crockery was cracked, the pool looked ok but all the outside furniture needs replacing, now you get the picture. Getting somewhere to eat nearby proved a problem so we had to drive back into Nevers to get fed. The place is very near the motorway but we experienced no noise and to re-iterate we did have a good night's sleep which when traveling is what you are after and this was our cheapest overnight stop at about 37 euros.

We booked an overnight stop at the Balladins Nevers Nord Varennes Vauxelles due to its proximity of the motorway on our way back to the UK ( 5th August). As we arrived we were impressed by the appearance and car parking space available to the front of the Hotel. The Reception was in a large hall located in the central building. It was airy and clean with a circular service table and individual tables set up for breakfast the next morning. The receptionists were courteous and had a good command of English. Our room was in a single story block that faced the swimming pool. It was compact but was well appointed with tea and coffee making facilities. It also had a flat screen TV. On the down side the pool looked grubby and the lack of seating around the pool left a lot to be desired. The room lacked the advertised air conditioning which became an important issue later that afternoon when we witnessed a horrific rain storm combined with a large hailstone storm, which prevented us from ventilating the room. As a consequence the room’s humidity level became uncomfortable. When the storm ended we had to leave the door open for the sake of fresh air but clearly with the inherent lack of security. The storm which destroyed trees and vegetation also filled the pool with leaves. A positive outcome was that the pool was then cleaned the next morning but unfortunately too late for our enjoyment. This hotel is very reasonable at 50 Euros per night but we would have gladly paid more for a little more comfort.
