Stayed here for 4 nights while visiting the Dordogne. Hotel Le Madrigal was an excellent choice. The location is just a short walk from the ancient part of the town. The rooms are very comfortable. I really appreciated the double paned windows! Although Avenue de Selves does not have an abundance of traffic, the windows really reduced the noise from outside, more so than other hotels in France during our trip. We were in room 9 which is top left in the photo of the hotel. We only saw one desk clerk the whole time. His English was about on a par with our French but we had no real difficulties communicating and he was very nice. At some times the desk is not manned and there is a sign directing you down the block to their sister hotel. After 8 pm, the front door is locked and you need to use the code to get in. Since the hotel has only 9 rooms, it makes sense not to have the desk manned 24/7. They do charge for parking but it is worth not having to scout the streets to find available spaces. I think it was 20 euro for the 4 nights. Be careful, the stone archway that leads to the parking area is pretty narrow and then you must go steeply uphill for a short bit. When driving out, we found it best to have someone be a "spotter" to let the driver know when it was safe to exit. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel as it was cheaper to get a pastry and a coffee down in the old city. That said, the breakfast room was light, airy, and roomy. Also, the lobby had a pleasant seating area at the back. A couple of nights the four of us would share a bottle of wine down there as neither of our rooms was meant to hold 4 adults. There is a Laundromat about a 3 minute walk towards town on de Selves. Also, when you get tired of duck and foie gras (on nearly every menu) there is a lovely crepe restaurant (Les Tulipes) around the corner from the hotel. Bottom line - an excellent stay and a reasonable price!

Nice accommodations, friendly host, great location, good wifi, and parking. Pretty much everything that one would need when staying for a visit in the area. The hotel is a very easy walk to the historic part of town where restaurants and shops are abundant. We weren't able to stay for breakfast, but it looked excellent!

“Good base for the Dordogne”

We stayed for three nights at the Madrigal hotel. It was an easy ten minute walk into the medieval town of Sarlat. We spent a Wednesday morning in that town at the bi-weekl;y market. We stayed for three nights at the Madrigal hotel. It was an easy ten minute walk into the medieval town of Sarlat. We spent a Wednesday morning in that town at the bi-weekl;y market. Sitting on a terrace with a cafe creme was a wonderful opportunity for people watching. The hotel is good value for money. Parking is right behind the hotel and that is always a concern in European towns. The rooms are a little small so we upgraded to a triple which gave us a single bed upon which to lay out our opened suitcases. Sarlat is about a half an hour drive from most of the attractions in the area. The hotel owners were very helpful and the hotel was clean.

“More Than a 2-Star”

Le Madrigal is well-located on the edge of the busy centre of Sarlat, has nice rooms with ensuite, and the manager and staff were very helpful. Rated as a 2-star, but consider it as a 3-star ; a pleasant experience there for us for our 5 nights.
