“Villa on the Bay in Mitirapa, Tahiti Iti”

Love our villa. Clean and fresh. The owner and staff are very helpful and friendly. Great location on a peninsula. Some villas on the ocean and some on the bayside. We were on the bayside and really enjoyed it. Kayaked almost daily from our villa.

We decided not to stay in the heart of Tahiti but to venture up to Tahiti-Iti and stay at this wonder villa. It did not disappoint. Very authentic and very friendly. I do have several recommendations. First, rent a car at the airport or port before you come. You must have a car here, nothing is walkable. The gracious hosts took us to get a car, but it is not a service they do. There is a Carrefour just a couple of miles away. The other thing, if you are bothered by bugs, bring bug spray. They provide the burner, an electric contraption, and a handheld bug zapper. The only room under AC is the bedroom, so there are bugs in all other rooms. The pool and beach are amazing. We loved the open-air concept of living. The kitchen had everything we needed—a great place to unwind. The Olympics were held just down the road. We drove around on all the roads, except the one that goes through the mountain. They suggest a 4-wheel drive for that. The other odd thing is they do not have a reception, so you need to know the NAME of your villa and just go to that villa. No need to check in; they will come by in a bit and welcome you.

We stayed at Villa Hotu for 4 nights and 5 days. The facilities in the kitchen were nice and we were glad to have the kitchen utensil basics available for our stay. The oven portion of the stove was a little tricky to use since it is a gas stove and you had to remove the bottom plate in order to access the pilot light. The property manager was really helpful and quick on their response to help with this issue. The living room is open (literally no walls) to the beach/backyard, which is nice in thought, but gets to be A LOT especially when you just want to run from the biting bugs and heat of the day. Look in the TV cabinet for the mosquito racket that came in super helpful at night. The other real issue we had was with all of the doors which seemed to not lock well and didn't provide any security. Because we had an open concept villa we had a friendly stray dog that would visit us every morning, so we just had to make sure the sliding door to the kitchen was always closed. The pool and cabana were amazing and we enjoyed being so close to the beach. There was a one person kayak for use which was nice for paddling out. My spouse did go swim in the ocean, but there are no coral reefs near this area so snorkeling wasn't something that we did here, however, there are a ton of sea cucumbers everywhere! The outside breakfast table was a nice touch, but the chairs and sun lounge chair were crawling with ants even after being cleaned, so we did not use them. The master bedroom sliding glass door doesn't seal all the way around and mosquitos were constantly droning in so we only slept for one night in this room. The second bedroom had twin beds where we stayed for the rest of trip since the mosquitos couldn't get through and the room was better air conditioned. We got the impression that the second bedroom was more updated since the facilities were nicer and the sliding closet doors worked better. The bathrooms are nice with open showers. I do wish that they would update the website since there was a washing machine but no dryer available. When it rains the floors in the master bathroom gets really wet and slippery. The bathroom garden is cute and helps add to the ambience of the villa. On the left side of the villa is another villa that has a shared wall so it was a little louder for the first couple of days, but wasn't a real issue. The property to the right is shutdown or abandoned we were not sure, but it looked like a restaurant at one time (maybe during the Olympics). Town isn't too far away, but you will need a car to get anywhere on this side of the island. It's quiet with little tourist and vehicles and made a nice respite from Papeete, which is bustling.

This was our last stop in our Tahitian islands vacation. We stayed 2 nights, 3 days. We were supposed to stay 3 nights but we cut it short and came home early. We came in late and arrived to the villa being left open with the lights on. Our stay was average. This place is for people who don’t want to feel like they are on vacation but staying at a family’s beach side house. Pros Host was receptive and talked to us through WhatsApp. It was spacious and beach front. It was a unique experience and villa. Cons There are no doors or windows around the villa. All the bugs including the neighborhood pit bulls (2) of them frequently visit you often. All the islands have a stray dog problem. The bugs became such a problem we had to sit in sweats and socks or we couldn’t sit outside. We were being eaten alive by misquotes. The pool was cold and dirty and we didn’t use it. The lighting felt so dark at night and the TV couldn’t be converted to English so we couldn’t watch anything to pass the time at nights. Even though it’s dry season it rained like crazy and the beach was not usable. We only got to take out the kayak that sits one only once. The kitchen appliances are old and outdated. The cups are yellow from overuse. We didn’t have a dryer and since it was raining all day on and off our clothes remained damp. The place is far away from anything. If you like isolation, this is for you. Lastly, we didn’t know we had to clean our villa. We have never encountered this and we have stayed in villas all around the world. We left the trash full and the sink with a couple of dishes and they charged us. I like a place to have a reception and staff you can see and feel safe at. This wasn’t it for us.
