This could have been a really excellent experience, but the service really detracted from the meal. Initially, service was very attentive taking our order. Then it was a bit of a wait until our meals came out. They were hot and fresh, so I think the kitchen was just backed up. My wife and I both had excellent filets with vegetables, mushrooms, and potatoes. Really a great entree! Unfortunately, once the server dropped off the food, he never returned to the table. He visited each of the tables in close proximity to us multiple times, but never came back to ours. We waited for a long time and even tried to get his attention but were ignored. Since we appeared to be the only Americans in the restaurant at the time, we felt that may have had something to do with it. By the end of the meal and after being ignored so long, my dad felt strongly enough where he didn't want to pay. We stopped at the counter/host stand on the way out and did pay, but it was a real shame that we didn't have a better experience, especially considering the food was so good.

“Basic hotel”

Very nice location and a great view from the balcony. Rooms were clean and okay. Wifi didn't work anywhere else but the lobby - and even there it was weak connection. We didn't like the breakfast either.

Mixed impressions – Room: fantastic balcony, clean room, very quiet, good beds, large closet, toilet is separate from the bathroom, very secure bike storage location in underground garage. Be aware that the bottles of water and wine with glasses on the trays are really from the Mini Bar, as are the pretzels and other snacks on the trays. They are not welcoming gifts from the hotel. Service: overall acceptable and mostly friendly but nothing extra. For example, the trains went on strike, which for cyclists in a very hilly Black Forest is significant. By pure luck we caught the last running train from the Titisee to the Schluchsee where the Mutzel Hotel is. We would have, otherwise, been stranded and unable to get back to the hotel. We would have had to cycle back over the mountains in the dark. Because we check out in the morning and must travel to another part of the Black Forest, we needed to be informed about train & strike status. The front desk personnel really didn’t feel that was something they should be concerned with. Additionally, no one ever mentioned the sauna and whirlpool facilities to us. They were available on a limited schedule basis but nothing was ever mentioned. We read about it in the Internet after our arrival. Food: After reading such great things in the reviews about the food, our first night was a huge disappointment. From the two options, we chose the fish and expected something quite delicious – hopefully caught locally. However, after a delicious salad and soup, what fish we received amounted to a very large fish stick (or fish fingers) which must have been frozen and then deep fried. Dessert was canned fruit salad with ice cream. The fruit salad was offered again at breakfast the next morning. Fearing the worst, we asked for a vegetarian meal for one of us and then the non-fish option for the remaining two evenings. The dinners were delicious for the last two evenings. The kitchen had difficulty handling the vegetarian request. The same savory cheese and noodle dish was offered both evenings. The potato soup had most of the ham removed from it. Again, beyond that first night, for a regular meat-eater, the dinners were great. Vegetarians would be advised to inform the hotel of dietary needs when booking. Only bottled water, available at a charge, not tap water is offered. Additional note: the food options for hotel guests with dinner included are very different from those offered to restaurant customers. Wifi is available at no cost and when requested, the log-in information was freely given. Just be aware that the signal doesn’t reach into the rooms. Unless working from a hotel room or privacy is essential, both the dining room and the small front room have an excellent signal. Do ask the front desk for the Black Forest Tourist card. Travel on the trains and busses (when not on strike) is included during your stay. Train only tickets for bicycles were just €2.20. We were so busy cycling that we didn’t have time to check out the other opportunities available with the card. The hotel asked for a €5 deposit for each card which we received back upon check out.
