“Excellent in every way”

Part of me doesn’t want to share a review so I can keep it secret the other part wants to share a great experience. The food at Kesslermuehle was fantastic… every meal was excellent. The hotels staff were wonderful. The massages were excellent, the spa was small enough not to be too crowded and big enough to have everything. The beds were wonderful and we were able to have toppers on the mattresses upon request, pillow menu gave us the opportunity to order exactly the right pillows. The area in winter is superb - whether the sun was shining or clouds were grey. We will return 😄

“A really great hotel”

We went for half board and an upgraded room, both worked out well. The room was a large modern room at the back of the hotel, very quiet at night with a nice view from the balcony looking out over fields and forest. We went for half board and an upgraded room, both worked out well. The room was a large modern room at the back of the hotel, very quiet at night with a nice view from the balcony looking out over fields and forest. The food was varied and always excellent, the staff are very friendly and coped fine with our lack of German - even providing a translated copy of the menu each day. The large spa is excellent, just the job after a long day of walking and the heated outside pool was excellent too

As others before me, I would like to praise this exceptionally well-run family hotel, which is neither too small to feel overwhelmingly intimate nor too large to feel corporate and anonymous. In other words, expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere with great amenities, like a well-equipped spa and outdoor pool, a cosy restaurant and outdoor terrace – all on the outskirts of the large village of Hinterzarten, one of the best-known resorts in the beautiful Black Forest. Hence there are myriad possibilities for walking/hiking and/or biking and excursions further afield to either scenically attractive places like nearby Titisee or culturally rich cities like nearby Freiburg, one of the oldest university-towns in Germany, or even Basel in Switzerland with world-famous art museums. A ticket permitting multiple free trips on regional transport is handed out to you upon arrival. Reception staff will be happy to advise you on excursions – moreover, the hotel itself organises various events and activities. Rooms are warm and comfortable, furnished in a Black Forest (lots of wood) kind of Baroque (gold and beautiful patterns) “hygge” style. Some, mostly sporting a balcony, are overlooking the gentle green hillside opposite with only the burn running along the length of the buildings providing soothing sound accompaniment. I personally appreciated the lighting design which gave plenty of varied options depending on one’s mood or chosen activity. The bathroom was new and spacious. Overall, the thoughtfulness that has gone into lots of details impresses: for example, there is a hiking rucksack in the room, an umbrella, a shoehorn, a free bottle of sparkling water in the fridge (despite the excellent quality of the tap water from the region). British travellers used to a tea kettle in their room may ask to have a nicely designed kettle unit provided. Food is excellent and plentiful (at breakfast you are able to make a sandwich for lunch to take with you on your hike in the paper bag helpfully provided – IF you can manage anything at all after having explored the manifold breakfast options, including eggs and accompaniments to your specification). Dinner is a festive affair and the chef/s deserve the highest praise for imaginatively conceived and beautifully executed evening menus of 5-7 courses with various options. Staff in the restaurant are unfailingly friendly and happy to advise on regional and other wines. I was particularly impressed with their efficiency while never appearing hurried or reluctant to engage with guests, thus creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, allowing guests to savour the delicacies on offer. Just as well that hiking the next day is also on the menu, as it were! My special thanks go to the sous-chef who had prepared the ‘Ebereschenjelly’ on offer for which he had himself picked the fruits to make the jewel-like, delicious jelly with the slightest bitter tinge givingit its distinctive flavour. I thought I had never heard of and definitely not tasted it and, upon expressing my interest, was provided with a generous sample to take home. Google revealed that it’s rowan jelly – similarly valued in the UK as an accompaniment to cheeses and venison as it is in Germany. Will I be back? Have a guess …

“Marvellous hotel”

This is really a very wonderful hotel which we reviewed below. For some reason the ratings have come out incorrectly. We did in fact mark it as 5 out of 5 for every category! I can't recommend this place highly enough and we are already looking forward to our return visit in July 2023.
