“Football trip”

About 25 minutes on the train from the airport to the city centre and then 15 minute walk to the hotel . Hotel close to all city centre bars , cafés and Cathedral . Staff friendly and helpful . Room clean , bed comfortable. Good choice at breakfast .

This hotel is in a convenient location for public transport (Friesenstraße underground is just a few minutes' walk away) and around a 15 minute walk from Hauptbahnhof and the Altstadt. It's also a similar distance to the lively Barbarossaplatz and next door to a Irish pub and a fee steps from the Päffgen Brauhaus if that's your scene. The staff I spoke to (two front desk and one cleaning lady) were all friendly and pleasant. There's also a selection of food and drinks and I was given a voucher for a sweet snack or (non alcoholic) drink for not needing room service during my 2 night stay. The facilities in the room were fine, there was a minibar style fridge, which is great, good blackout curtains and a view of the TV tower. I think the room could do with a refurb, the tissue box came off the wall in the bathroom and a panel on the back of the fridge also fell out. My only real complaint, which did cause me some discomfort was the lack of air conditioning in my room. The August heat was over 30 degrees at times and even opening windows was little help. This did hamper my stay quite a bit as I struggled to get to sleep and stay asleep, even after taking a cold shower.

The shower drain was partially plugged and the water took forever to drain out. The soap container in the shower was empty. One of the two elevators never worked so it took a long time waiting for an elevator.

“Reasonable hotel in a good location”

After a few ultra modern (if a bit too trendy) hotels on this trip, this Mercure as a bit ‘standard’, I think we’d say. After a few ultra modern (if a bit too trendy) hotels on this trip, this Mercure as a bit ‘standard’, I think we’d say. In need of renovation, the hotel is nonetheless in a useful location being a short walk from the main station. It was pelting it down so we took a taxi. Small room and tiny bathroom. Really tiny. Shower over a bath with high sides. I managed to get in and out but some less nimble might struggle. Not the best shower, but adequate. Bed comfy enough though the pillows were laughably soft, even the spare ones in the drawers. No safe, no kettle, but there was a fridge. No blackout curtains (we brought eye masks as a previous hotel on our trip had a similar problem). The hotel is on a street with lots of late night bars and restaurants. But we found the soundproofing good so we were not disturbed. The air conditioning worked well. We were there for just two nights. Both nights the bar was shut so we got our free drinks from the fridge in reception and had them in the room. The area has several places for breakfast including a lovely little cafe over the road offering vegan pancakes amongst other dishes. As well as the clubs and bars, there’s also a traditional pub nearby where the waiters wander around plonking small glasses of beer in front of you until you say ‘nein danke’ or put your beer mat mat over your glass. I reckon we might stay here again on our next visit to Cologne unless we find a cheaper deal elsewhere.
