“Gem of a Place”

The hotel and restaurant are excellent! Rooms are a bit dated, but quite large and very clean. The restaurant has top quality gourmet food and wine; breakfast buffet was very good. The location is quaint and quiet! Only negative was the weak wifi, which did not reach to the room.

The hotel is newly renovated - most parts, some minor items remind of the older heritage like the tiles on the way to the nice rooms. Great bed, only downside is the in-room shower. I don't like that although I have to admit it is quite stylish. Enough power sockets but unfortunately mobile network is nil and WLAN wasn*t very stable. Breakfast and the wonderful (although small) garden impeccable.

“Older traditional hotel and a good place to stay.”

This hotel isn't in the town of Emmendingen but in a village about 3-4 miles away. It has pride of place in this lovely village with a couple of old farms and some charming homes. This hotel isn't in the town of Emmendingen but in a village about 3-4 miles away. It has pride of place in this lovely village with a couple of old farms and some charming homes. It looks quite grand and the grounds are well maintained. We had to wait a few minutes for someone to come to reception to meet us, we think possibly the owner. Her English seemed to be as limited as our German, we think, but she pointed us in the direction of room 7 via the lift. Our room was large and similar to room 6 mentioned in the other earlier review but it seems that some improvements have been made since 2009! The room was well appointed and the beds very comfortable. Instead of a double bed, this room has two large singles pushed together with separate lovely duvets. The woodwork could do with a touch of varnish in parts but otherwise everything was fine. The TV was big for a hotel room! The flamingos are lovely but a bit noisy into the evening - but we had a quiet night! Unless you are used to spending upwards of 40 Euro each for a two course meal, which we aren't, the restaurant is not for you! From the illustration in a magazine in our room featuring the chef, the cuisine looks very ornate. Breakfast in the lovely - indeed gorgeous - dining room was excellent. A wide selection of cold meats and cheeses, various accompaniments, fresh fruit salad, an excellent selection of fresh rolls and breads and so on. The fruit juices were of premium quality. This hotel doesn't make any provision for English speaking visitors, it seems. The menus are all in German as is the visitor info in the room. There is wifi in the rooms as well as the public areas, more than we had been led to believe. Would come again if in the area.

On arrival the outside appearance and threadbare carpet on the steps gave a first impression that we did not want to stay. On entering it looked a bit like faulty towers with one person attempting to move an extremely large piece of furniture through reception on his own without much success. The check in also did notgive a good first impression, the keys were just handed over with a wave that the stairs are through there with no offer to help with the luggage. We walked into a dark corridor when the receptionist came after us to putthe light on and at that point did tell us that there was a lift. We stayed in room 6 which was quite spacious and clean with good seating without having to sit on the bed. The balcony overlooked the garden where flamingos roamed freely and the dood tothe balcony was fitted with a fly screen so the door could be left open. The only bad thing was the ceiling which they had attempted to give a mottled look but it had tuned out like 10 years smoke staining but who spends all their tim looking up. The restaurant provided good food although it was a bit on the pricey side and service could be a bit slow when theywere busy. The restaurant staff were friendly and helpful and there was nowhere else to eatwithin about 3 miles. The breakfast was mediocre with tinned fruit and not very appetising looking meat and cheese. I have not recommended this hotel simply because people have different expectations and what suits me probably does not suit others
