Food an buffet was good, service very good. But the dining room was very hot, the corridors are long and echo a lot. There are no sound proof doors that can be closed to limit noise. Food an buffet was good, service very good. But the dining room was very hot, the corridors are long and echo a lot. There are no sound proof doors that can be closed to limit noise. If some opens a door in the top corridor at the end, then you can here it echo and reverberate if you are on the bottom floor at the opposite end of the hotel. Kids congregate on the landings, running around and making noise which just echoes around. The walls between rooms are very thin, to the point where you can follow conversations clearly that are happening next door, when people are just talking to each other. You have a massive room key with a heavy weight on it as well, which you could use to smash through the paper-thin walls. The bathroom is weirdly laid out, you have to sot at an angle on the toilet, the shower cubicle is like an airport toilet, and the decor (inc. throughout the hotel would of been out of date in the 1990s). The pool wasn’t open, nor was the bowling alley. So yes it is a sports hotel but at this time of the year, only by name.

POSITIVES: The booking process directly with the hotel was easy and professional / the bedroom and bathroom were very clean / the breakfast was very good and the young lady supervising breakfast was warm and helpful / the hotel is quite easily accesible from the Rennsteig / the lady who checked us out was kind and friendly NEGATIVES: While well-intentioned, I'm sure, the young lady receptionist who checked us in seemed perfunctionary and remote. There seemed to be no genuine warmth / the lady attendant in the restaurant for dinner seemed indifferent to her job and/or restaurant guests, almost to the point of resentment. We had tentatively booked a table for four for dinner but unfortunately one of our guests could not make it. Upon arrival we therefore asked to be re-seated at a smaller table elsewhere and this elicited virtually a sigh and a rolling of eyes... in a restaurant that was maybe 5-10% occupancy, like it was really a big chore to shift some cutlery from one table to another for heaven's sake.. this culture continued throughout the evening, cold and perfunctionary. As a native English speaker I tried my best with my German speaking but there was no effort on her part to be a little patient with me, instead she quickly rattled off German comments and questions with no regard to the language situation...she spoke no English herself / no lift... and of course we were put on the third floor in a near empty, off peak hotel so we had to lug our heavy baggage up six flights of stairs and lastly.... the bathroom was so pathetically SMALL, really an insult to guests. It really could not have been any smaller unless they put the WC inside the shower cubicle!! Nowhere to hang anything, place our toiletries anywhere..... we could expect such in a little B&B perhaps, but not in a supposed international standard hotel. ... we are an elderly couple who have travelled extensively around the world all our lives, and are regulr visitors to Germany and Thuringia so have plenty of comparisons to draw upon. We are very respectful, polite and undemanding people and did not deserve to be treated with such disrespect in the areas described. It seems Sporthotel has too much business and is not interested in retaining its customers. Alternatively, the staff need some urgent customer service skills training, communication skills training and some common sense appreciation of managing customer interface of those whose first language is not German. ... speak slowly and simply to us where necessary.
