In the lee of the Parthenon, and just around the corner from the outstanding new Acropolis Museum, there's no better place to be based if your chief interest is exploring the monuments on the Acropolis and its slopes, or making your way along the surrounding streets and past 'the oldest house in Athens' to end up at the ancient agora. The massive remains of the Temple of Zeus are nearby, too, and a walk past them and through the neighbouring National Gardens affords a peaceful route to Syntagma Square. Or you could find your way there underground. Akropoli Metro station is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel and brings the wider city (and of course the airport) within easy reach. Should you be venturing further afield, the Key Tours office is less than ten minutes' walk away. We enjoyed their day-trip to Mycenae, Napflio and Epidauros. You can catch a local bus to Piraeus here as well. The Herodion Hotel turns fifty this April. With such a wealth of experience in the hospitality business it was no surprise to find that every single member of staff with whom we dealt during our stay was helpful, courteous, attentive, and engaging. Nothing was too much trouble. All our questions were answered promptly, we were given good advice about how to get where we wanted to go, and when I mislaid my phone in the hotel it was quickly found. The restaurant on the ground floor was once a garden. The design of its conversion managed to preserve the old trees in situ, so they rise through the glass canopy from among the dining tables. Service here was impeccable, the food and wine delicious. Nearby is a cocktail bar and inviting lounge area with a log fire and extremely comfortable chairs and sofas. As for breakfast, made available in its own separate area, a very wide variety of food is offered, from cooked eggs and bacon through a range of kinds of bread, croissants, cakes and pastries, fruit, yoghurt, oats, honey, jam, and cold meats, together with different juices and of course coffee. Don't miss it! We stayed at the hotel for two separate periods during our time in Greece in March. On both occasions our rooms were very comfortable and of a good size, the second room slightly smaller but with a view of the Parthenon. Beds were wide and firm, bathrooms immaculate and the showers invigorating. The first room looked onto the front street, which was very quiet with little traffic even during commuter hours. There were a couple of substantial older Athenian houses to look at here, built in neo-classical style. We were glad to be able to sit on the balcony and get a feel for the city early and late. We would entirely recommend the Herodion for its supremely convenient location, the comfort and style of its rooms and eating spaces, and above all for the staff whose warmth, good humour and quiet professionalism sustain the spirit of the hotel. Great location to the Acropolis and Plaka, with many restaurant options and transportation nearby. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and offered many tips and recommendations. They were quick to answer questions and help with organizing tickets and/or transportation, with a genuine motivation to help. There are many different room types, so it might be more helpful to call the hotel when deciding, rather than booking online based on room type alone. We had a balcony room, and it was overlooking the street below. The balcony is barely large enough to sit, but suited our needs fine because we were almost never in the room. It was also nice to watch people come and go, and see a bit of daily life in Athens. However, we could hear the elevator going up and down. Ot hardly went at night, so we were able to sleep with no problem. Our friends had a garden room, which was more expensive, but it was the same size room and an enclosed area with no view at all. They were disappointed. If you’re hoping for a specific view, I’d call and ask for it. The higher rooms have better views in general. I’d also ask for a room away from the elevator. The included breakfast was fantastic! They had all sorts of fresh options, including local pastries and dishes, as well as basic items (eggs, toast, granola, yogurt, etc.). The coffee machine made good espresso and cappuccino. Overall it was a great hotel and we’d stay there again.
