Before eight, the beach belongs to no one. The sweepers haven't started, the bar shutters are still down, nobody has come to rake the sand or lay out the loungers. I wade into the Aegean while it's flat as glass and swim out forty or fifty metres, the sun low and warm behind me, the water so clear I can watch small fish scatter beneath my own shadow. It shimmers. For ten minutes there is no hotel, no company, no phone — just a man in the sea with an empty head. This, it turns out, is the thing I came four hours from home for. Not the five restaurants. This. Then the machine wakes up, and the holiday I paid for begins. We'd booked Eagles Palace, hotel and villas, on the Halkidiki peninsula, in the shadow of Mount Athos, for our first proper adults-only trip in five years. A word on that: Europe doesn't do adults-only in August, and however hard a hotel tries to keep children tucked away, they surface everywhere, at all hours. We'd chanced the last week of July. We were not, it's fair to say, alone. It's a lovely hotel, and it earns its place in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World list — crystal water, private sunbeds, bamboo umbrellas, five restaurants, four bars, everything from paddleboards to yoga, and a PADI centre for the diving nuts. The quality is real; it grew on us as the days went on. But it took a while, because the welcome was cool. We arrived to a receptionist juggling two couples, and we were quietly the wrong couple. The others, villa guests, it turned out, were walked through everything: drinks appearing, the whole place explained. We were left standing. No drink, no map, no here's-how-it-works. Nothing rude, nothing you could point at. Just the distinct sense of being the cheaper seats. That feeling, subtle, never overt became the hotel's quiet through-line. The gym: villa guests only. The excursions: dear, and dearer still once you learned the same thing cost a fraction outside the gates. It's a two-tier place, and once you've noticed, you can't un-notice. And yet, this matters, none of it was the fault of the people. The staff, mostly Greek students working the summer, were the warmth the pricing lacked. A receptionist called Elizabeth in particular: chatty, genuinely kind, the sort who makes you feel like the point rather than the transaction. The coldness was structural. The humans were lovely. Worth separating the two. My one real quarrel was with the water. Picture it: thirty-five degrees, me under a bamboo umbrella in the only patch of shade, watching my family slowly roast on the loungers in front of me. Six euros for 200ml. In town, a litre costs one. You cannot sit on a beach in that heat and not drink, which is exactly the point. Captive audience, no exits. I never said a word out loud. I said a great deal in my head. The best days, it turned out, were the ones spent escaping the bubble. The hotel's private boat to the islands ran into the thousands. We took the local ferry from Tripiti instead, three euros each way, a two-euro bus the other side, to the island of Ammouliani and a beach called Alykes: a clean, quiet bay, safe water, adults doing very little, beautifully. But the image that stayed with me came before the beach. We stepped off the ferry into a harbour bar called the Nautilus, ordered banana-and-chocolate crêpes, and watched the port wake up, old men on ancient, half-dead motorbikes puttering along the front, delivering fruit. That was worth more than any excursion on the hotel sheet, and it cost the price of a pancake. Ouranoupoli, the local town, gave us our dinners. We ate at Mare, Golden Hook and Lemonadis — Mare the clear pick, a family taverna on the port with fish worth crossing a sea for. Two local children, maybe four and six, wandered up mid-meal carrying a kitten and sat themselves down beside us as though it were the most natural thing in the world. It was. At Golden Hook, a host who'd plainly parked us at a poor table spent the whole evening quietly atoning for it, do you want to move, another drink, on the house, a man wrestling his own conscience over the seating plan. You don't get that in the bubble. The bubble charges you six euros for water. The town buys you a drink because it feels a bit bad. (One note for the hotel, if anyone's listening: run a later coach. The last bus back at ten sends you home before the evening's properly warm. Half ten, eleven — let people linger.) I hadn't come for any of this, exactly. I'd come to sleep. It had been a hard few months, some family health worries among them and what I needed was blunt and unglamorous: rest. So I slept. On the beach, every single day, an hour at least, cicadas sawing away in the pines the whole time, relentless and somehow soothing. It takes the body and the brain a few days to believe they're allowed to stop — to drop below the hundred-miles-an-hour that owning and running a company keeps you at. At fifty-seven, the kids grown and gone, you feel the change in yourself. And you notice, from your sunbed, the people who've built lives at a different speed entirely — the diving instructors, the painters — and you wonder, briefly, about the roads not taken. Then you fall asleep again. That, too, is the point. On the last morning I swam out one more time, before eight, before the machine woke, back into that flat and shimmering sea. They handed us oregano and olive oil on the way out — a small, genuine kindness, and one of the truest things the hotel did all week. Typing this on the plane, the two-hour drive from Thessaloniki already behind me and the scenery still in my eyes, I think nine days was exactly right. The hotel was the frame. The holiday happened in the water before eight, on a three-euro ferry, and at a taverna where a child set a kitten on the table between us.

What a fabulous holiday we’ve just had at Eagles Palace. We stayed as a family of 4 (2 adults and 6 year old twins) and we had such a great time. I couldn’t fault anything - the service, location, food, hotel, beach - everything was lovely! For us, this holiday was all about the beach. It’s where we spent most of our days. The service at the beach was excellent. The water is so calm and warm. The water sports centre is so convenient. The kids went to the kids club every day which they loved. On Friday and Saturday evenings, there are additional kids club activities (a movie, a dance party, games etc) from 7.30pm to 10pm. I do think the resort would benefit from a couple of additional evenings with activities arranged for the kids, rather than just 2 evenings a week. The Greek dance on a Tuesday didn’t have the same effect as the mini disco on a Saturday! The movie on the beach is a fantastic set up - however I feel the movies shown were adult films as opposed to family ones. A suggestion would be to reconsider the movies shown as some are not suitable for children! Prebooking the restaurants in the evening is a must - you can do this via the app, so it is all very convenient. The food is outstanding in each restaurant, including the buffet. And there is a great variety. We never felt we were eating the same food over and over. The atmosphere and feel of the resort beautiful. It is laid back and relaxing, while being super family friendly, safe and clean. The staff are all so friendly and welcoming. We are already looking at dates for next year - we can’t wait to return!
