This is a truly spectacular place to stay, all year round. For us, it was the nearby Sierra Nevada, the most southerly ski resort in Europe. If you like long days of skiing in pure sunshine (lifts close at 16:45) in a medium-sized resort (110 km of 131 slopes, 21 lifts), this is the place to be. Weekends are busy but Mon-Fri outside Spanish school holidays have short queues at the lifts and empty pistes, often all to yourself. The property itself is beautifully located in quiet, empty mountain wilderness not far from the ancient village of Güéjar Sierra (lots of lovely restaurants!) and only 40 minutes drive from the stunning City of Granada. The owners are a lovely couple who really look after you. We were impressed with the variety and quality of their evening menue at very decent prices.

Ana and Paco are the perfect hosts. The Casa rural Fuente la Teja is a charmingly restored farmhouse in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada just outside the city of Granada with a private pool and a relaxing atmosphere. Up in the hills the property benefits from being a few degrees cooler in the Summer than the surrounding countryside and NO mosquitos !! Thsi does not mean that it is remote though - secluded but within EASY (20 mins) recah of Granada, the Sierra Nevada ski / mountain bike resorts and still only about 45 mins from the beach. Ana and Paco work tirelessly to entertain their guests and arranged for a number of excursions for the children and I to enjoy whilst we stayed with them. You also have the option to eat at the property with Ana producing some wonderful local dishes as well as some more recognisable ones to keep the children happy. If you wish to experience the real Spain and get away from the typical coastal holiday then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casa rural Fuente la Teja.

After adventurously trying to get there the wrong way, the jeep-only gravel road from Quentar, we finally found this charming casa for a one-night stay. Being the only guests, we were treated more like family members, even their dog took us in! Our little daughter delightedly got to help them with cherry-picking, and we were spoiled with food, attention and care. I got Spanish lessons from hostess Ana and she showed us all how to play Juego de Oca, like an extra grandmother. Go and visit, but make sure to stay at least a few days. You will feel like our kids did: They didn't want to leave, and we all hugged as we left!

I've read all the reviews and I'm impressed with the enjoyment people felt when they've stayed here. The position of the hotel is outstanding and the countryside here is amazing: tranquil and picturesque; the sky at night is spectacular. However, I have reservations and I advise travellers to take heed. We stayed here one night in October, off-season, on the way to Portugal from Torrevieja in Alicante. The hotel itself is refurbished, that's true, but it has been furnished with what might be seen as a lorry-load of "antique" bric-brac. A lot seemed a bit wonky: the windows, the decor, just about everything. We arrived there at about 23.00 but the host, probably the hotel's best asset, was welcoming and we had a few beers recovering from the drive up to the hotel. Now, the drive up to the hotel. Admittedly, we had driven a long way after a day's work, but the drive up that mountain was just about the toughest I've ever done. I cannot understand why no reviewer here hasn't mentioned the drive up the mountain. A long and winding road that seemed to go on forever and thank goodness for strong headlights and accurate satnav. When we got stuck in to the beer, our host told us, in a positive way, that more people were killed on the local motorway than the mountain road up to the hotel. Given that about ten cars a day travelled the road to the hotel, this was scant consolation. The journey down the next day followed an average breakfast (but it was off-season). This bit of the trip was worse in many ways than the drive up because we realised what we had driven up in, in the pitch-dark, the previous night. We both thanked fate we didn't meet traffic coming the other direction, and especially, not having to reverse in the dark with feeble reversing lights. Still, safer than the motorway. To repeat, the hosts were great and the site was lovely. If your nerves are more steely than mine, you'll enjoy it for its tranquility and seclusion. But the hotel itself is just a bit fake.
