“Beautiful hotel, must visit if in Maastricht!”

Really loved our experience here. Rooms were modern and cozy. Loved the location and area and the spa was so relaxing and really had all we wanted. It was a great night away. Also, most beautiful Catholic Church i've ever seen. Can't wait to come back in the spring and summertime!

Château St. Gerlach is a grand historic estate set amid serene parklands on the edge of the Ingendael Nature Reserve, just moments from the charming town of Valkenburg in the Netherlands. This five‑star superior hotel, a distinguished member of the Relais & Châteaux collection, is privately owned and operated by the Oostwegel family, offering refined luxury with a warm and personal touch. The hotel features 59 accommodations in total, including rooms, suites, and residences spread across the historic château, the manor farmstead, and the estate’s charming outbuildings. For my stay, I was assigned a Junior Suite located in one of the tower sections of the annexes in front of the main hotel building, accessible directly from the outside and offering a generous space of about 40 square metres. The Junior Suites include a king‑size bed, a wardrobe, a flat‑screen TV, a small seating area with two chairs, and a large desk, and are equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine, tea‑making facilities, and a minibar. Housekeeping is provided once daily; while there is no turndown service, complimentary bottles of water are replenished each day, and a box of sweet treats was waiting in the suite upon arrival as a welcome gesture. The bathrooms feature a double vanity, a rain shower, an integrated toilet, and a heated towel rail, and are stocked with toiletries by Sothys, a renowned French skincare brand. Breakfast is served each morning in a dedicated breakfast area. The estate offers two dining venues—the fine‑dining restaurant Les Salons and the more tavern‑style Burgemeester Quicx—along with an additional bar inside the hotel. In addition to a small but refined buffet with an exquisite selection of cold dishes and juices, the breakfast offering includes a complimentary and extensive range of freshly prepared à‑la‑carte options, with consistently friendly and highly attentive service. Les Salons, located in the historic château building, provides a refined fine‑dining experience with modern French cuisine inspired by regional Limburg ingredients and seasonal produce. Beautifully designed with a blend of classic château elegance and modern touches, the restaurant impressed me with a tasting menu in which every dish was crafted with finesse and remarkable flavour. The service was exceptionally attentive and courteous, and the wine selection was equally outstanding—exactly what one would expect from a Relais & Châteaux restaurant. Burgemeester Quicx, located at the edge of the estate near the main entrance and the hotel’s conference centre, serves a more down‑to‑earth menu with hearty regional dishes and comforting classics. Here too, every course was delicious and excellently prepared, and the service was warm and professional. The hotel’s Lobby Bar, with its intimate atmosphere and inviting château‑style charm, is an ideal place to enjoy a drink before or after dinner. The estate’s pool is located inside the former stables, offering a generous swimming area and plenty of loungers for guests to relax throughout the day. A small sauna and steam room are also available, though the pool and spa facilities are housed in a separate building, meaning you have to walk outside to reach them in any season or weather. Unfortunately, the estate does not offer a gym. The historic chapel, built in 1664 by the noble De Villers family, adds a distinctive sense of heritage to the grounds and reflects the long cultural history of the château. The chapel is historically linked to the nearby grave of St. Gerlach, a 12th‑century hermit from Houthem who devoted himself to penance and service; his burial site became a place of pilgrimage and inspired the monastic community that shaped the estate’s early history. The beautifully landscaped gardens, dotted with contemporary and classical artworks, invite guests to wander, pause, and enjoy the harmonious blend of nature and art that gives the estate its distinctive charm. Château St. Gerlach offers a beautifully balanced experience of heritage, comfort, and refined hospitality, with its well‑maintained estate, excellent dining, and warm service, and can genuinely be recommended for a relaxing and memorable stay.
