Following a family wedding in a Leitrim castle, myself and my good other half headed to Abbeyglen Castle Hotel, Clifden. A Dublin native, I’d been wanting to visit Abbeyglen for some time. We are home a week now and I smile every time I think of our experience. From arrival to departure we had the best of Irish hospitality. Our large room was idyllic with a four poster bed and a peaceful outdoor view of flowers, streams and trees. We attended the most enjoyable and entertaining history talk delivered by the larger than life character, Brian (one of the owners) on the evening of arrival fuelled by a complimentary prosecco reception. By the end of the session, guests were mingling with fellow travellers sharing their travel stories. We ate in the restaurant that evening, attended to by a lovely French waitress, her name escapes me but she was proud when we shared that we had holidayed in the area in southern France where she’s from some years back. The food in the restaurant was fabulous. The wine selection excellent. Brian, hotel owner mingled throughout the dining room with a friendly, attentive, funny and warm demeanour. A pianist played in the background for the duration. We took ourselves to the hotel bar after dinner to find the turfs fires lit, lights turned down, candles lit throughout and the pianist ramping up the evening with tunes we all know from The Beatles, to Cold Play, U2 to Christy Moore and more. The atmosphere was fabulous. It reminded me of times gone by, the guests singing along, people invited up to sing a tune and all in the room respectful and joining in. The entertainment highlight was the owner, Brian taking to the piano and belting out songs with super energy, tune after tune. My father was a musician as a hobby, looking at Brian dance his fingers over the keys on the piano and jump from song to song brought me right back. We had a super evening. Breakfast the next morning was plentiful with a great selection. We loved Abbeyglen so much that instead of checking out, we enquired about availability for a second night. There was one available room and we jumped on it. I don’t think in all our years of travelling worldwide we’ve done that, a first for us but Abbeyglen is too good a hotel to leave after just one night. Brian shared some tourist tips with us, we took the Sky Road loop to Kylemore Abbey and visited some gorgeous beaches too. With the town of Clifden only a 5 minute walk from the hotel we experienced the local hospitality on day two but made sure to be back at the hotel for 10pm, not to miss the evening sing songs and music. We’ve stayed in some super hotels around the world. Abbeyglen Castle is different, the owners and staff go that extra mile to ensure that guests have the most enjoyable experience and leave with a smile. I’ve recommended the hotel to friends and family since. Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil are next up for us but we can’t wait to return to Abbeyglen. Thank you all at Abbeyglen Castle Hotel.

A Truly Magical Stay – Worth Every Mile ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ From the moment you arrive at Abbeyglen Castle Hotel, the welcoming aroma of a turf fire tells you you're somewhere truly special. The cosy atmosphere is unforgettable, and enjoying freshly baked scones with tea by the open fire in the bar is simply heavenly. Our room was beautifully old-world in style, full of character and charm, yet absolutely spotless. We also had a wonderful view overlooking the lovely green area making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The hospitality is second to none. Each evening at 6:30 p.m., guests are welcomed with a Prosecco reception where the owner shares the fascinating history of the hotel and Clifden. His stories are entertaining, full of humour, and there's certainly no shortage of Prosecco! Dinner was exceptional. The menu may be small, but every dish is beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and cooked to perfection. The pianist playing during dinner creates a wonderful ambience, and afterwards the bar comes alive with the pianist and singer performing all the old favourites, creating a fantastic evening of music, fun, and great company. Breakfast again a wonderful treat - great selection of fresh scones homemade brown bread and breakfast from the kitchen if required. One of the things that makes Abbeyglen so special is the owner's presence throughout the hotel. He takes the time to speak with guests, making everyone feel genuinely welcome. His warmth, passion, and attention to every detail are evident in every aspect of the experience - a rarity in many hotels today. It may be a long journey to reach Abbeyglen Castle Hotel over on the west coast of Ireland - but it is worth every single mile. From the warm welcome and cosy fires to the exceptional food, wonderful entertainment, excellent staff, and outstanding hospitality, every moment of our stay was memorable. We left already planning our return and would highly recommend Abbeyglen Castle Hotel to anyone looking for a truly special getaway.
