I had read some less that favorable reviews before we came, but need not have worried. Arrived early expecting to just leave our bags in, but the lovely gentleman at reception said the room was ready, and could go straight up! The hotel is quirky, and has an old lift so the rooms may be slightly smaller? Our main priority in any Hotel is cleanliness and quality of sleep. The Sonya is absolutely spotless - (yes there was a few marks on the wallpaper), and the beds are so comfortable, the bathroom is like new, and the shower is lovely. TIP: If your hairdryer doesn't work, turn off the TV and take out any chargers - it will then work on the lower setting, this only happened to us once! It is in a perfect location across from the Opera House - within walking distance of most of Romes attractions (we got a Metro to the Vatican) and good value for money. Breakfast was in the Hotel itself - looks like a new dining room, small but perfectly formed! Basic choice but the food was tasty, and plentiful -and just ask if you can't find something. We were on the 1st floor, and were expecting more street noise, it was actually very quiet. You are going to get queues at Reception at peak times in any hotel, but we found the staff friendly and helpful. Would stay again! Sarah

The hotel was well centralized to most everything and within walking distance to many venues, stores, restaurants, the train station and the Colosseum. The hotel definitely had charm and the potential to be an extraordinary one due to its kept historical characteristics starting with its elevator.… more

The hotel was well centralized to most everything and within walking distance to many venues, stores, restaurants, the train station and the Colosseum. The hotel definitely had charm and the potential to be an extraordinary one due to its kept historical characteristics starting with its elevator. You remember those caged-style ones seen often throughout 1930 and 1940 movies? Well, they had one and in working condition. Beautiful staircase with marble floors. My understanding is that the hotel used to be an apartment complex some years ago. The entrance had a majestic door, that among other things needed tender loving care. It was disappointing to see the few pieces of garbage scattered on the entrance floor, which for the two nights we were there, it was never picked up. They had a sweet girl at the front desk within a very small lobby who was trying to accommodate everyone, but there were obviously too many folks waiting in line for her to handle. Those that were told to come back at 3:00 for check-in were obviously too tired from their trips and frustrated when the turn around for their rooms was not happening. Luckily, when we were finally given a room, it was clean indeed and the sheets were nice and fluffy. The visit was doable, but it definitely needs more care and attention.
