Just for clarity before I start: this is not a B&B - there is no breakfast (they apparently have an agreement with a bar nearby). This is not a hotel - reception is only open from 3 to 9pm. This place has definitely seen better days but if you get the right room you might say it has some kind of charm. THE GOOD Absolutely amazing location, the building’s facade is delightful and elegant. The staff we encountered were very nice natured and helpful. THE BAD Very little soap and toilet roll in bathroom - if you were there for more than 3 or 4 days you would have to ask for more as there is no room cleaning. No safe in room and no security in reception. Mean check-out time of 10am. Expensive at £130 per night given the first room we were given. THE UGLY When we arrived I found our room to be small and depressing. No wardrobe, no TV, no air com (just a fan in the corner), crummy old furniture, low quality floor coverings, tatty and grotty around the edges. Linens were fairly clean but fairly old. Cleanliness in general questionable. Our room looked nothing like any of the photos on Booking.com. On there everything looks decent enough, contemporary and spacious. Our room bore absolutely no resemblance to any of the photos and was depressing and charmless (avoid room F at all costs). Bathroom looked grim - flaking paint, evidence of mould and slight waft of drains. We enquired about changing room and we were told we could change the room but only the following day. If we wanted to change room we would have to check out the following day at 10am and then re check in the following afternoon. Therefore we decided we would see how things went and make a decision the following morning. Early the following morning I was conscious of the small of drains and a very smelly toilet. Toilet had leaked overnight and there was a sticky and unpleasant residue on the bathroom floor - disgusting. Tiles were loose around shower, hot water ran out after 1 shave and 1 shower. Toilet stank - just seemed unsanitary and unhealthy. We decided we wanted to change room and that’s when we discovered there is no reception until 3pm. We managed to get number for manager and arranged to change room. We were told it was very unusual as nobody had ever complained about the room. I didn’t appreciated being made to feel like we were being difficult, especially as the reviews here make it extremely clear how many people have found the hotel unacceptable. The second room was much better - large with high ceilings and tall windows. A wardrobe, a TV, air con and bathroom that didn’t smell. Still rough around the edges and has seen far better days but not completely unacceptable given the location.
