I’ll start out by saying that Urbino, beautiful as it is, requires the traveller to have a bit of a talent for Italian (or google translate), and an ability to interpret public transport of staying outside the walls. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, if you’re looking for a comfortable place to lay your heads (especially families), don’t mind being a little out of the town (of Urbino), and are on a budget, then Hotel Tortorina has three draw cards. The first is the views from the terrace. My family and I had a few (self catered) lovely breakfasts and an evening meal (also self catered) out there, and it was lovely. The second is the pool. Pack your swimming cap, as these are mandatory, but you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful respite from the summer heat, and (thanks to the swimming caps) non of those suspicious clumps of hair that are commonly found chasing swimmers around hotel pools. The third is the service. OK, the hotel has probably long said goodbye to its peak glory, but the staff were wonderful. After nearly a week there, I was unable the test the patience of the young lad on the breakfast coffee pump each morning (with my horrendous Italian and my unquenchable thirst for well-made coffee). But the star has to be Marco. Marco runs the desk, the books and the reception, and he is a true gentleman. His patience with my poor Italian and my fumbled use of google translate was remarkable. And I’ll never forget sharing a raucous laugh with him when the iPhone spat out some hilariously translations, such as ‘where can I buy a megaladon’ and ‘I enjoyed some lovely penis tonight’ (the latter a very bad interpretation of ‘penne’ - that second ‘n’ is apparently critical. Hotel Tortorina? Yep - give it a crack. It’s not to bad. Oh - and I eventually managed to utilise the bus stop across the street from the hotel to get effortlessly from the hotel to Urbino’s Palazza de Resistance and back. Say ciao to Marco for me!

This hotel represents excellent value for money. We stayed here for 4 days in August. Built into the side of a hill the entrance is on the top floor. A large reception area gives fantastic views over the country.side. The restaurant is on the next floor down with a huge terrace. We had breakfast there every morning, drinking in the view. The rooms are on the lower floors but as the hotel is right at the top of the hill, views are not compromised. The rooms are clean and well appointed with good air conditioning (essential as the temperatures were in the high 30s). They have fridges - a nice touch when you want to keep a cold drink close at hand. The pool is on the second floor. It's very well-maintained and was a real plus for me when the heat of the day made anything more energetic too taxing. Personally, I would have preferred out without the loudspeakers broadcasting the local music channel, but that's just me. The hotel is just a few minutes drive from the historic centre of town, so very convenient. Overall - bravissimo, Hotel Tortorina. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The positives: The location is great, about 15-20 minutes walk from Urbino city center. It has a unusual built, when you enter you are on the 6th floor. There is a parking, which is a difficult thing to find in Urbino. The view is good. The negatives: The hotel was practically empty which gave the place together with the outdated furniture and design a sad feeling. The hotel should indeed work on improving as it has a good potential.

“Reasonable for the money but food could be better”

We stayed here last week as part of a tour. Our room was comfortable and our bathroom was fine - no problems with shower curtains (no one had one!) although water did get around a bit. The staff were very good, and the food on some nights was good, but on others, really not good. Breakfast was basic but there was plenty to eat. The hotel is around 30 minutes walk from the town or a bit less, and the walk would not be a problem for someone who is of average fitness. There are buses too. The bar/sitting area overlooks the valley, and has a super view. We did not use the outdoor pool. Overall, I understand this hotel is not expensive and for a reasonably priced hotel it is okay.
