We stayed two nights in this incredible onsen hotel. It was a perfect stay and authentic experience of the highest level, we can only recommend staying there. - The onsen is brand new, high-quality natural water, very aesthetic and has several baths (the indoor baths are sharp and the outdoor baths are romantic, an ideal combination) - The food is delicious, using local products with good taste. Among the best meals we had during our fourth trip to Japan. Served in a beautiful room that dates from a few centuries, quite an atmosphere. - The hotel was recently refurbished and is ran by an elevated family. They used to be farmers and have become hoteliers a generation ago: a perfect mix of knowledge! Adequate and genuine hospitality, both from the two generations currently in place and from their wonderful (and young!) staff. We received good advice on what to do in the region. Kudos to the special music room, which boasts a legendary sound system that is worth a visit in itself. Little plus: the anime director Miyazaki comes there! To make friends jalous ;) All in all, a top and intimate place. We wish them all the very best and are thankful to them.

Overall, this was a highlight of our trip. We loved being in the mountains and found Motoyu Magokuro to be a lovely, comfortable and welcoming place to stay. Property: the property and surrounding onsen were a beautiful sight to take in. The main building is over a 100 years old and was once a farmer's house. It was converted by Naomi's (the current proprietress) family into a Ryokan. The building retains it's old charm while also feeling modern + comfortable. Onsen: there are indoor onsens and outdoor onsens. Both the indoor and outdoor onsens have private family, female only and male only. We enjoyed all of them immensely but my favorite were the outdoor ones. They seem to have been recently renovated and were so incredibly warm and peaceful. Even though the hotel had a good amount of guests, I mostly had the onsens to myself. Yes, you might have to be naked in front of other people but just enjoy it! Rooms: We stayed in the traditional japanese room and it was comfortable with a beautiful mountain view. The ensuite bathroom was modern + had a great soaking tub. We enjoyed sleeping on the futons and found them to very comfortable. Dinner: Dinner was SO good! We really enjoyed the traditional japanese dinners + breakfasts. They made sure to switch it up each night so we weren't eating the same thing every night. Every single thing I ate was delicious - most of the things I had never tried before and thoroughly enjoyed each dish. I think what was the best part for us was how warm and welcoming Naomi, her husband and their staff were. Every single human we interacted with was lovely and so happy to have us there. This is a five star place in a five star location and we can't wait to return.

We stayed for 3 nights in one of the Japanese traditional rooms in this ryokan. Everything about the stay was excellent and left us with some brilliant memories. The ryokan itself has a lot of character with a traditional dining area where you sit on tatami mats at a large table with a stove to cook food. There are inside and outside onsens, with a family version if you prefer not to share with others. The traditional Japanese room we had looked out onto the green and rolling mountains. You sleep on the floor in specially prepared beds which the staff put out for you whilst you are at dinner and then put away the following day. This all adds to the authentic experience. Food is kaiseki style, so expect about 10 small dishes for breakfast and dinner. These are varied, so in our 6 meals we had we tried a lot of different food. The food is exclusively Japanese so be prepared to eat fish for breakfast and lots of new dishes! The best part of the stay by far is the personal service from the staff. The owner, Naomi, Karako and Takama take time out of their day to get to know you, help with the food and try to make your stay as personalised as possible. Each evening we were asked what our plans were for the following day and came down to breakfast to prepared information to help us with it. Lots of other personal touches as well throughout the stay. The location is a good base for exploring Kamikochi and the local hikes around. There are many neighbouring onsen along the road within walking distance as well.

This ryokan was incredible! Everything about it was fabulous , the people were very nice and the food was delicious! It was very peaceful and quiet. The surrounding mountains were green and beautiful. We could hear the sounds of the river from our room which was peaceful and comforting. The paragon room was fantastic! Overall the ryokan was amazing, one of the best places I’ve ever stayed at! I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay.
