“Nice and big budget hotel.”

We stay in hotel hana for two nights. It is within 10 minutes walk from train/bus station, old Town and other attractions. The room is bigger than the last hotel I stayed in Nagoya. It has an air-conditioning heater, Japanese TV channels and very nice bathroom. You may need to keep the heater on to keep the room as the window is not not thick and the air-conditioning needs 5 minutes to start. Tea and electric kettle is provided in the room but you can also go to the lobby to get the free tea and coffee and use computer. WiFi is good but the free breakfast has only limited choice. The dining area is also very cold. So make sure you wear enough. Restaurant and shops are easily accessible and the temple is just next to the hotel. Checkout is at 10.00 but you can leave your luggage under the shelf. I will definitely stay in hotel hana again as it is cheapest in town with free breakfast and a good night sleep.

We stayed here one night in May, mainly because the other hotel we had stayed at the last time had truly nuts pricing for Golden Week! Well this place is pretty basic, but the staff are totally excellent and I have no complaints other than maybe the patina is getting a bit too obvious and a remodelling might be in store. Apart from that, the beds were OK and the A/C is good to have. I fell in a Buddhist pond and gouged my arm after we had checked out of here but still had our luggage stored at the hotel, and despite the noon hour I was permitted to go back into the room we had rented and shower the pond scum and blood off my gouged up arm. I'm very grateful for this kindness! The arm is OK now, nearly two weeks later!

Pros: -The hotel staff were very nice. -Our room was clean and nonsmoking. -The breakfast is fairly decent. -It has a warm, homey sort of feeling. -It's only a 10-12 minute walk from the station, which is convenient. -It's on the cheaper side. -The location is good/convenient. Cons: -It's a little old and the hallways had kind of a smokey/musty smell to them. -There's only wifi in the lounge and it only kind of works--they have Ethernet cords that they can loan you though. -The pillows were really uncomfortable/Japanese style, but that's Japan. (I rolled one of my blankets up and put that inside the pillowcase, which worked fine.) The beds were comfy though. Overall I'd recommend staying here. While it's not as modern/up-to-date as some of the other hotels, it's pretty cheap and convenient and our stay was fairly comfortable for the most part.

“Basic hotel in a good location”

We had a Japanese style room for 3 nights in Takayama’s Hotel Hana. Three futons covering pretty much the entire room there is still just enough room to open two larger suitcases. Naturally futon’s can be folded away for extra space. The hotel is also offering western style rooms in case one prefers beds over futons. The room also contained a fridge and a small TV-set on a low table. The wifi & AC were working fine and there is also a possibility for a breakfast but we did not try it at all. The small window in the room gave in some natural light but there is not much to look at in terms of a view because of the frozen glass (and a parking lot). Views might be more inspiring from the upper floors, our room was quite low. Umbrellas and even rubber boots were available for quests to use for free from the entrance. The room in general is pretty basic and quite tired, maybe slightly overpriced for what you get (compared to at least what we had in Kanazawa & Kyoto) but still well in our price range. Although Takayama is rather small town the location of the hotel is great. About 5 minutes from the train and bus station and less than that to the Kaji Bridge after which the old town basically starts. Just next to the hotel is a buddhist temple with a pagoda and a small cemetery that are worth checking out. Closest konbini (convenience store) Daily Yamazaki is on the way to the bridge and 7-Eleven on the same street as the hotel but couple of blocks south. In case you need to update you travel clothing due to the weather or for whatever reason there is a small shopping centre (Uniqlo, ABC-Mart and some others) about 15 minutes further down south. We were visting Takayama a week after the golden week and quite a lot of stores and restaurants on the west side of the river seemed to be closed. Both stores and restaurants were also closing down for the evening quite early (even on our family standards) but there is an izakaya area really close to the hotel with later opening hours (just walk towards the Kaji bridge but take some alley to the north at some point before reaching the intersection by the bridge).
