We stayed at this traditional hotel in Takayama for two nights whilst we were travelling around Japan, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and our room, which was decorated and furnished in a traditional Japanese style, was very comfortable. We enjoyed having the kimono and slippers to wear whilst we were in the hotel too. We had a Kaiseki-style dinner served in our room on one night, and our breakfast both mornings. The food was delicious, and the process of the server setting the table, serving the courses, and explaining the dishes to us was fascinating and enjoyable. We used the onsen a couple of times whilst we were there, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We’d already visited an onsen, so we knew the etiquette, and the facilities were very clean and well-maintained, as you’d expect. Takayama is a reasonably small town, and very walkable. The hotel is very well located for all the sights you’d want to see, and for the shops, markets, and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and would recommend it if you’re staying in Takayama.

Twice I’ve stayed here, way back in 2018 and 2023, I’m part of a group, and this is the hotel/ryokan they used, in 2018, as a solo, I like the room but I more like it when in 2023, I traveled with my sister and the room they gave as, were so beautiful like a single home..the only thing is, you have to use a real key, it’s not digital but the bathroom were modern western style…the foods? So delicious!! I’m so happy that the travel agency use their ryokan for their clients..there is a onsen too in the facility but none in your room..it run by generation family members..the ryokan is walking distance from the JR station..and also close to the main center of attraction..

“Nice traditional stay/experience”

If visiting Japan then you can't not stay in a traditional Ryokan for at least part of your stay! This one is ideally situated about a 10 minute flat walk from the train station (so very easy for visiting other local towns like Hida Furukawa like we did) and a few minutes walk to the pedestriani… more

If visiting Japan then you can't not stay in a traditional Ryokan for at least part of your stay! This one is ideally situated about a 10 minute flat walk from the train station (so very easy for visiting other local towns like Hida Furukawa like we did) and a few minutes walk to the pedestrianised streets with their wooden traditional buildings. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room (10) on the ground floor with a private hot spring (wooden) tub. The room was a bit jaded but warm and clean, the bathroom with the tub was small, cold (unheated) and smelt of mould and mildew and this was where we used the hand held shower to bathe. There was a separate sink outside the "Tub" room and in addition there was a separate WC and small sink in a small room off the main room's hallway entrance. Beds are traditional futons on the floor which are made up for you each night after dinner. We asked for 2 each so were a bit thicker than normal and we slept surprisingly well on them! We had the traditional Kaiseki meal the first night in our room, lots of small courses and we both found something that we liked and was very tasty. Breakfast is also served in your room the following morning at your chosen time and your futon and bedding will be cleared away before your breakfast is served. . This is a traditional Japanese breakfast (very fishy) so may not be to everyone's tastes! There seemed to be very few places open to get a European style or pastries for breakfast but there is a Mc Donalds at the back of the train station! On our second night we ate at Butchers just around the corner from the Ryokan. Excellent beef but quite expensive. Would recommend booking though as quite popular! There is a nice lounge area and complimentary sake is served in the afternoons while you can chat to other guests. Your outdoor shoes are left at the entrance and slippers are provided for use indoors but you select any pair that's your approximate size - would be much more hygienic to have clean numbered pairs that correspond to your room so they remain yours for the duration of your stay. The staff were absolutely charming, a couple spoke a little English but with the help of Google translate and a bit of gesturing we got by. Overall a nice stay and experience but the food may not be for everyone!

We stayed at Ryokan Tanabe for two nights . Room was clean and well presented if slightly jaded. Dinner and breakfast was included. Service was good and friendly, the evening meals, kaiseki (8 courses) were served in our room and were well presented with the added element of you cooking one of the courses over a heated burner. Breakfast was typical Japanese (so fishy). Because you eat in your room once the meal is over a team of housekeeping come in to set your futon/make them up. They also come 15 mins before breakfast which (as the latest breakfast is 7:45) means being up and organised which I found slightly invasive. The ryokan is well sited for the centre of Takayama and a 10 min walk from the station. It’s a good experience if you want to do a Ryokan in Takayama.
