I stayed a Japanese-style hotel which is called the Tamura in March. There are some upsides and downsides. The details are as follow. <Upsides> 1. There are unique and relaxing hot spring baths in this hotel. You are absolutely satisfied with them if you are an enthusiast about hot spring. 2. This hotel has kind of old Japanese-style facilities. You are pleased with them if you are interested in old Japanese-style buildings. 3. They serve Japanese cuisine which tastes fantastic. <Downsides> 1. Some of facilities in this hotel are relatively old. You might feel a little inconvenience. 2. It takes you three or four hours from Tokyo to here by car or bus. It's a bid far from Tokyo. 3. There aren't amusement facilities around here. 3月にたむらという日本旅館に滞在しました。その良い点とそうでない点は、以下のとおりです。 ＜良かった点＞ ①この旅館には様々な温泉があります。温泉好きなら、必ず満足するでしょう。 ②長い歴史を持つ旅館のため、伝統的な施設を見ることができます。そうした古い建造物に関心があるなら、楽しめるでしょう。 ③夕食も朝食も、伝統的な日本料理が提供され、とても満喫いたしました。 ＜これはちょっと＞ ①歴史のある旅館だけに、古い設備もあり、不便を感じる方もいるかもしれません。 ②東京から車かバスで3〜4時間かかります。ちょっと遠いかも。 ③周りには娯楽施設はありません。温泉以外の娯楽を求める方には向いていません。

“Out of the way, but worth a trip”

Shima Tamura is a 450 year old Japanese-style inn (ryokan) about a 2.5 hour drive from Tokyo. The rooms are clean, spacious and laid out well. The food is very good, particularly the huge buffet breakfast. The highlight of the place, however, is the huge choice of hot spring baths (onsen), both indoors and outdoors. I would recommend this place for couples, families or friends looking for a place to relax with no distractions.

“Okay but could be better”

This onsen hotel is a bit dated and there is no wifi in the building where we stayed. Amenities in room or onsen are limited and some onsen does not have shower facility. This onsen hotel is a bit dated and there is no wifi in the building where we stayed. Amenities in room or onsen are limited and some onsen does not have shower facility. Visited one of the outdoor lady onsen which has a good view of waterfall. Dinner is served at private dining room instead of at the guest room like other onsen resorts. The Japanese course dinner was good while buffet breakfast was rather basic but still feed you full. Hotel staff are polite and attentive. There is a lady at front desk who can speak good English. As it was raining, they were very kind to send us to their sister hotel Shima Grand Hotel for our bus back to Tokyo.

Stayed 2 nights as part of tour. Friendly owner and manager always available in the morning and end of day after an outing for the day. Only 1 masseuse and quite busy. On facility store or coffee shop not open all hours. Facility is well kept and the private onsen in room is much better vs ne… more

Stayed 2 nights as part of tour. Friendly owner and manager always available in the morning and end of day after an outing for the day. Only 1 masseuse and quite busy. On facility store or coffee shop not open all hours. Facility is well kept and the private onsen in room is much better vs needing to walk to other outdoor onsen if weather isn't the best out. Recommended for relaxed stay if ok not to have the latest.
