The hotel is quite old but well preserved and clean. The reception staff is very attentive and always willing to help. We stayed in a room that was not facing the river, though the view was nice with the tree foliage. The highlights of the stay are: the dinner and breakfast and the amazing 露天風呂 outside and next to the river. Very wide with different temperatures. The hotel has a free shuttle from JomoKogen and Minakami train stations. Make sure to reserve them before your stay.

Good things first: The hotel is very beautiful. Old but clean enough. Our room have the river view with yellow/red leaves. The shared bathroom near our room was clean, no smell. But again, this is an old hotel. It is only $250/night average. So we didnt expect much but to our surprise the room is not too small not too big, we feel comfortable. The view in Nov was priceless. The outdoor onsen was gorgeous. We have been at least 6 different onsen hotels thru our 3 times visit Japan before we stay at this Takaragawa onsen, and this was the most beautiful onsen BUT the service at this onsen was the worst. The dinner was not the best, the have tried better dinner at another onsen. - Only nice and good service was the front desk gentlemen who answered all my messages thru Booking.com, he was also the one greeted us at the front desk. * I took 1 star off because of the pick up services. -The driver who picked us up was late 15 mins. We almost paid out of pocket and took a local bus to the hotel. Luckily we saw his car drove by and we jumped out of the local bus. He saw us, no "apologized" ,nothing. There were only 2 couples in his car. My husband and I who are Asian-American. The other couple is from Spain (of course they look white). The driver was very nice and talked to the Spain couple, totally ignored us. We got to the hotel, the driver told the Spain couple to leave their 3 big luggage and 2 backoacks for him, he will carry it down for them. I thought he would done the same for us, BUT NO, he told us to bring our carry-on luggage with us (we dont have 3 big luggage like the others, only 2 carry-on). I think the driver thought we are chinese. I know Japanese doesnt like Chinese. But we are NOT chinese. We are Asian but we are not original from China. We were born in VietNam but raised in America. - The waiter/waitress at the dinner were not happy, were not polite, no smile, no thank you. We (the customers) were the ones kept saying "thank you" / "arigato" to them. We have been visit Japan 3 times, been at many hotels, many restaurants, many coffee/bakery shops, many different city of Japan, never experienced such a bad service like this. They put all Asian guests to one dinner room. They separated "white look alike" people in another room. The servers were nice and polite to "white look" people BUT Asian. I was not the only one noticed it, the other Asian couple sat behind my table also said the same in English that was why I could hear and understand them. I think they are Thailand. The servers were just throw the rice and soup in front of us, didn't clean the empty dishes to make room for the desserts. They didn't say "enjoy your meal" or anything (all the other hotel included dinner that we went, they all did that).

Having travelled to Japan for over 40 years during spring, autumn, late autumn, late winter and now early spring, and stayed at many onsens, I admittedly had high expectations. The outdoor pools were fantastic, beautifully set against the mountain scenery and I think I would have especially liked it more in late autumn or late winter. Even late September there were horse flies, so it's nature, so expect it in the warmer months. The pools had varying temperatures and unfortunately only the one outdoor women's only bathing pool. First arriving at the hotel, it did not give off great vibes, peeling timber windows frames, unattractive concrete building, front entrance drab.
