Hakodate had already surprised me, but La Vista Hotel took it to another level. It’s one of those rare places where everything just works. The location alone is incredible — a short stroll from the train station, right beside the red brick warehouses, an easy hop to the ropeway, the trams, and even Goryokaku Fort. It felt like the whole city was on my doorstep. And then there’s the breakfast. Yes, there are the usual western options, but the seafood spread is on another level entirely — the freshest salmon, sashimi, roe, and more. Honestly the best breakfast seafood I’ve ever had anywhere. The rooms were bigger than the usual Japanese standard, but what really stood out was the view. The moment you open the door, you’re pulled straight to the window. Even the lift lobbies and hallway ends frame Hakodate like artwork. And of course… the onsen. Good location, 10 min walk from train and overlooking the harbor. Rooftop onsen was a highlight, with cold winds and snow blowing by during my soak. I did not try the breakfast buffet, but understand it to be excellent. Many adjacent restaurants. I walked along the water and had dinner at a brewery in the brick warehouses near the hotel. It was good and a great atmosphere.

“Cute little hotel with unexpectedly great views from the outdoor bath”

I'm not sure why there are criticisms of this place. My husband and I had a perfectly great night here on the way down to the main island of Japan and I really wanted to stay longer. I'm not sure why there are criticisms of this place. My husband and I had a perfectly great night here on the way down to the main island of Japan and I really wanted to stay longer. Yes the rooms are small (but isn't this the case for most of the hotel rooms in Japan?) I was very pleasantly surprised by the interesting European style of the hotel and the gorgeous views from the rooftop outdoor baths (which are free to use for hotel guests). There were also complimentary hot drinks in the lobby and a few restaurants surrounding the hotel complex which made for very easy meal planning.

The location is between Hakodate-yama and Hakodate station, and is next to Hakodate bay area, conveniently located. You can walk to the hotel from Hakodate station, the tram station is 5 min walk, Hokodate yama ropeway station and Hakodata old city area is 15min walk. The room we stayed was not western style, I guess you can stay in western style if you want, but we liked Tatami and Futon, with some sitting space to view Hakodate yama. In the room, there was coffee mill and coffee dripper so you can relax in the room after onsen on the top floor. The floor of onsen area is a bit slippy, so be careful. We booked this hotel because of the famous all-you-can-eat seafood breakfast. Maybe my expectations were too high, the quality of the breakfast was not top-notch. Having said that, yes you can create your on seafood rice bowl. You can put Ikura (Salmon roe) as much as you want, there were several grilled seafood and vegetables. In addition to that, because this hotel is famous for its breakfast, there was a group of tourists from China. Their rudeness and manner at the buffet were unbearable. If the hotel can accommodate Chinese group tourists in the different buffet areas, which other hotels often do, the general guests would very appreciate and we can use the buffet cleanly.
