“Perfection!”

We had one glorious afternoon and evening at Hanamurasaki, and it was the perfect way to conclude our two-week trip through Japan. After the energy and pace of cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, the peacefulness of Yamanaka Onsen and the ryokan itself were exactly what we needed. One absolute mu… more

“Luxury, Serenity, and Flawless Gluten-Free Cuisine”

Our stay at Hanamurasaki Ryokan in Yamanaka Onsen was truly exceptional. Located a short drive from Kagaonsen Station, the property sits along the scenic Kakusenkei Gorge—an area celebrated for its natural beauty and famously praised by the poet Basho as one of Japan’s three finest hot springs. “A 2 night stay - leaving with an indelible lifetime experience..”

I would rate this travel experience a 10 plus. This 5 generation family run Ryokan achieves excellence at every turn. From the moment I checked in till the moment I left, I was awed by the attention to detail, the comfort, the unique design, and the warm hospitality. Stylishly built from the ground… more

“Incredible personal attention and great food”

As we have traveled around Japan over the last several years we have stayed in dozens of ryokan, large and small. This was our first stay in a high end establishment. The price was literally six times as much as we paid the night before in a small minshuku in Kanazawa. We were curious to experience… more

“Nestled in a valley. Built sling a cliff.”

A luxurious ryokan built on a narrow steep valley. Entrance floor at the top and elevator down to your room. Clean and seemed no more than 5 years from what seemed a major reform. Nice large communal onsen bath with Roten (outdoor) bath along the cliff. Best part was the entrance, layout, and de… more

  • The top reviews of Hanamurasaki are: We had one glorious afternoon and evening at Hanamurasaki, and it was the perfect way to conclude our two-week trip through Japan. After the energy and pace of cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, the peacefulness of Yamanaka Onsen and the ryokan itself were exactly what we needed. One absolute must is the nearby Kakusenkei Gorge promenade, which begins just beyond the hotel. The walk is breathtaking, with lush foliage, small waterfalls, and the beautiful Daishoji River running alongside the trail. Kevin was an incredibly accommodating host, and every member of the staff was warm, gracious, and genuinely hospitable. Our stay included both dinner and breakfast, and one of the reasons we chose Hanamurasaki was its reputation as a food-focused ryokan. That attention to detail was evident in every course. The preparation, presentation, and care put into the meals were exceptional, and they were very accommodating of food preferences and allergies. The property itself is stunning — minimalist, art-centric, and thoughtfully designed without ever feeling cold. The souvenir shop carried unique items, the tea service was excellent, and the housemade ice cream was unforgettable. We were fortunate to stay in a room with its own private hot spring bath, cold plunge, and sauna, so we did not use the public baths. The room was beautiful, peaceful, and offered gorgeous views, along with thoughtful amenities throughout. Our only regret is that we could not stay longer. The town itself is very quiet, and we occasionally struggled to find businesses that were open, though we would have loved to spend more time exploring — especially the local sake bar featuring regional selections. One standout from dinner was the incredible Noto beef from Ishikawa Prefecture, which was truly memorable. Hanamurasaki was a serene, luxurious, and deeply restorative experience — the perfect ending to our Japan journey..
