Hidden gem for sure. Free shuttle bus by hotel ( pre-book) that runs a few times a day from JR Morioka (2 1/4hrs from Tokyo on the Shinkansen). Hotel is compact and a bit tired looking, but fabulous onsen. A bit crowded at times but is partially indoors and outdoors with a low wall separating the onsen from an actual pond wth many carp/koi. I booked half board as therers nothing in the vicinity being the typical captive resport experience in many Japan ski resorts. Breakfast had a good selection of food. Dinner rather modest and more like home cooking, Dont expect things like sashimi and winter crabs. But at SG/AU$150 a night - fabulous value. Lft tickets very reasonable for terrain thats almost the same amount as Furano. Long red runs with 700m vertical drop. Also a Sno cat experience on saturday ( prices are up - now Y15,000 for one run up and down), but fab experience making first tracks on a former FIS downhill race course. No ski lessons in ENglish is one drawback. A great medium sized resort and would be cool to have as part of a road trip visiting the 2 Hachimantai ski fields, and Appi KOgen as well ( see my review on Appi)

“Sterile, tucked away”

Came here with the family and in-laws for a few days end of July. It's tucked away so you will definitely need a car to move around. shizukuishi prince hotel - Second visit, first time was 7-8 years ago. - Good hopsitality of the staff, very responsive to any requests. Very considerate to the clients throughout, even after checking out when we arranged luggage delivery. - As we were a group of one couple and one single, the hotel arranged interlink rooms for us without even making the request. - Some rooms, including ours, were refurbished to better meet the needs of customers. - The main reason we come back was the onsen, and the Koi (a kind of fish) living in a pond right outside the onsen. - Relatively wide variety of food was available for the buffet dinner and breakfast, with average quality. We found the food was down graded compared to years ago, probably due to cost cutting, and the popularity of the site with low-priced tour groups. - For the French restaurant, there was no more a la carte dish as in the past, probably due to wastage reduction. Only 2 options of set dinner were available, quality was high and taste was delicious. (reservation required, beef as the main course for both dinner sets) - The skiing condition was great genuinely. If there was snowing, the snow was quite dry and built up fast for easy powder skiing. The ski patrol was very responsible. Once snowing started to be heavy, they patrolled on the piste to make sure skiers/snowboarders were safe (the resort is very popular for beginners and intermediate). - There were quite a few tour groups at the time we stayed, most were taiwanese groups. Sadly, many of them had totally ignored the required etiquette (it was obvious that they ignored instead of not knowing). Extremely noisy even in the onsen, no matter children or adults. Some tried to touch/grap (!) the Koi (fish), and some even put their whole arms from the shoulder to the hand into the Koi pond. My male friend said some boys did not take shower and just jumped into the onsen. At night time, some kids played and shouted loudly at the outer area of the hotel making a lot of noise even after 9 pm till we lodged a complaint to the hotel staff (and we stayed at the 8th floor). - The poor manner and lack of courtesy and consideration of others of these people was not the fault of the hotel, but the experience of our stay was largely affected.
