Fukuzumiro Ryokan is fantastic! That is, if you are looking for an old fashioned ryokan experience. If you are looking for a luxury all mod cons kind of ryokan, search else where. The kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast were amazingly delicious, the futons comfy and the puffy duvets dreamy. I even liked the traditional buckwheat hull pillows, though my sister did not. The duvets were the puffiest I’ve ever experienced which was especially welcome as there wasn’t much heat in the rooms. We splurged on a Sakura room with a river view and loved the back ground sound of the rushing river below. Perfection. From Fukuzumiro ryokan it is an easy (uphill) walk to Yuryo public onsen (one reason why we chose it) where we spent a dreamy 4 hours.

This exceptional Ryokan has a rich history and this shows in the building. While I agree with other reviewers that it could use some light renovation and you can find dust, stains or mould here and there, the whole building emits an air of quiet dignity and old fashioned hospitality. It features three litte private onsens which can be reserved, two of which we tried and enjoyed, and a bigger shared onsen. Our little room, the smallest of the ryokan, was still very spacious by japanese standards, featuring a sitting area and a sleeping area as well as an incredibly beautiful view of the river. I imagine it will be exceptionally beautiful in autumn. The service is truly excellent and if you are friendly and open, they will definitely go the extra mile for you (for example they kindly accommodated an earlier breakfast time and offered commemorative fotos in the garden and feeding the koi and also gave tips what we should do the next time we are in japan). Truly excellent service. The meals were also vey good, we chose the japanese breakfast option. Traditional ryokans will have a set routine so you will be a bit tied into this, but we would come back again anytime and are grateful for the hospitality and the beauty that surrounded us (even though I have to say I really hated the shared toilet).

This is a historical and beautiful Royokan. Built in 1890 but well maintained. There is non in-room toilet, but a public one is nearby. We chose the Sakura room facing the river. It was pleasant to look at the river and listened the water flowing. The staffs were very friendly. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. The private onsen can be booked 50 minutes in the evening and 25 minutes in the morning. the location is convenient. about 1000 Yen taking a taxi from Hakone-Yumoto station, or 100 Yen with bus. I highly recommend this place.
