We stayed 2 nights at the hotel de Yama and were pleasantly suprised. Having read reviews we were worried it would be too secluded or difficult to get to as we were used to the hustle and bustle of the Japanese cities however, the quieter location was exactly what we needed. We took the bus from Hakone station which was about an hour long and then walked to hotel. There is a shuttle bus provided by the hotel once you get to motohakone which I would recommend if you are travelling with lots of luggage. We had ours shipped to the hotel and traveled light. We were greeted by staff who carried our bags in for us and to our room which was a lovely touch. The room was spacious and had a little balcony overlooking the lake and to the right we have a view of Fuji which we wasn’t expecting. Breakfast was included in our stay and we were given vouchers to use. We used the French resteraunt both mornings which was very posh and had a set menu to choose from. There is a Japanese restaurant but we did not try it. We did not use the restaurants for evening meals either as they closed at 730pm. You do have to leave your room key at reception if you leave the premises and if you choose not to have your room cleaned you got a drinks voucher to use at the bar which was a nice touch. The main town is a 10 min walk down the hill where there is access to the pirate ship and the famous tori gate in the water. There are also rope ways across the lake which you can go up for a better view of Fuji. There aren’t many options to eat as everything seems to close early however there is a 7/11 neat by. All in all although it is more secluded we enjoyed the laid back pace of this area.

“Gorgeous grounds with views for days”

I need to preface that we did not spend the night here but spent several hours exploring the hotel and and grounds and we have a delicious lunch here. This hotel I surely a point of interest as much as accomodations. It is the former home (estate? palace? home doesn't seem enough) of Baron Koyata Iwasaki, the fourth president of the Mitsubishi Group. It was converted into a hotel and the grounds surrounding it are expertly curated and the views from up here are spectacular.

“Mixed feelings.”

In general the outside is in need of m food pressure wash. Between their outside restaurant and the main facility (reception, rooms) no lights for about 75 meters. Poor WiFi throughout the facilities.poor gluten free selections. Bacon was removed from my table because it “contained “ glutten

We stayed at this hotel with high expectations, but unfortunately it did not live up to them—especially considering the high price. The property itself feels very outdated and old-fashioned. While some may find this charming, to us it felt more worn than classic, and not in line with what you would expect for the cost. The dining experience was a major letdown. Breakfast was disappointing, lacking both quality and variety, and the high tea felt overpriced for what was offered. Given the premium pricing, we expected a much higher standard. That said, not everything was negative. The onsen facilities were excellent and a real highlight of the stay, offering a relaxing and authentic experience. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which we appreciated. Overall, while the location and onsen are strong points, the outdated facilities and underwhelming food make it hard to justify the price. We left feeling that the hotel simply doesn’t deliver good value for money.
