Absolutely wonderful! Classic hotel with fabulous service delivery. From the front desk welcome to the restaurant service to the highly professional massage therapists. Each and every person is dedicated. Each staff person provides service with a can-do attitude and a smile. I spent 3 nights in this hotel and found my room to be sparking clean and very well appointed. The beds were beautifully firm with excellent pillows. All bedding and towels felt new and pristine white. There are Japanese style bathrobes in the room along with Onsen pajamas and slippers. Complimentary water is in the room along with tea and coffee. There is also a "beverage room" located on the lobby level with complimentary sodas and sparking water. Ate all breakfasts and one lunch in the Fujiya restaurant. Also had food and drinks at the bar area. Everything was served at all venues hot and oh so beautifully. The Onsen and the swimming pool are both warm and clean and quiet and well appointed with anything you might need. I also had one of the best massages in my life at their "Zen Spa". I truly felt relaxed and nurtured at this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to return if coming back to the area. I truly don't understand the negative reviews I've seen on TripAdvisor. I spend about 120 days a year in hotels around the world for the past 30 years and found this hotel to be marvelous. If you require a brand new 21st century designed hotel then don't stay here. It's obvious the hotels beauty is found in its iconic historical design. History with modern comfort! I also don't understand comments concerning "English" not being spoken. Everyone I encountered, including ground keepers, spoke some degree of English. If very complicated communications are required use Google Translate. Quite frankly if you require a hotel where everyone speaks 100% perfect English, then I suggest you stick to visiting English speaking countries. My final comments concerning arriving here via public bus transportation. (This has nothing to do with the hotel. Just putting an FYI here for those coming in without a car.). The public bus is very crowded. In trying to return back to the Odawara train station two buses refused to allow entry with a suitcase as they were overcrowded. You might want to consider just taking the train from Odawara to the stop nearest the hotel. Alternatively, if all you want to do is use the bus, make sure and buffer a huge amount of time when departing to the train station to ensure you don't miss your train.

There was something special about this hotel- I felt I had stepped back in time and experienced a piece of history! The staff were all extremely lovely and welcoming! Everyone greeted you in the hallway. This is a historic hotel that has had several additions over the years so easy to get lost! Pros: The lovely woman at reception upgraded our room class to a much nicer view. We were in the forest wing so it had been newly renovated. The hotel offers a free soft drink dispenser, coffee/tea, hot drinks dispenser in the common area. The rooms are very spacious. Hotel provides PJs for you to wear around. (Not in the lobby/restaurant) The onsen is very nicely set up with an outdoor and inside area along with a sauna. The dressing areas are very well equipped with amenities. We wandered to the basement where there was a really interesting history of the hotel museum. The grounds behind the building are just stunning. Short walk from the train station. Unfortunately the outdoor pool was closed when we were there. So much storage and a cute “dressing” area. Cons: The pool is wild and was probably decorated in the Roman era. You are supposed to wear a bathing cap if you use the pool. The smoking room is too close to the common area so we could easily smell strong smoke smells when picking up our drinks. I had read another review that mentioned this hotel gave off some vibes from “the Shining” which made me laugh but I was still charmed.

The hotel is beautiful with a wonderful garden. We visited in November 2025. We stayed in room number 8, the suite above the terrace. The staff were very friendly snd helpful. The room are key entry, surprising in a high tech country. There are several restaurants nearby including 3 fancy ones in a building that does not advertise their presence. Dinner reservations are REQUIRED on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and holidays. This is important: No reservations usually means no availability. The hotel has two restaurants; assume the reservation rule applies. We were NOT informed about needing a reservation when we checked in. We later mentioned this to the manager in hopes other travelers can avoid our experience. Dinner prices are consistent with high end restaurants everywhere. The service is impeccable. There is a bakery adjacent to the hotel and two very casual restaurants nearby: a Nepali and an American style diner serving creative hamburgers. Local bus sevice to Hakone (line H) and the Venitian Glass Museum (line T). is convenient but often crowded. The Hakone Free Pass is a good investment. The hotel is about 20 minutes from the main tourist activities in downtown it is a welcome retreat from the tourist crowds.
