We arrived early at the Hilton due to our cruise docking early at Yokohama. The Hilton porters were attentive and escorted us up to the luxurious Reception on the 1st level where we tried to book in early however our Executive room wasn’t ready so we waited in the Reception area until 10am where we were then taken up to the Executive Lounge for a couple of hours. The new Hilton has a strange layout as it has two buildings, an Entrance building and a Hotel building and some levels do not connect – sometimes you have to change lifts on one level and get into another lift that goes to the other building. There are information/diagram maps. Our executive room was very clean, nice and spacious. There was complimentary mineral water amongst the amenities of umbrellas, fabric/air freshener, slippers and even pyjamas in the drawer for you to use (not keep!) We had a pretty evening view. The toilets in Japan are very different and most come with a panel of instructions for the bidet etc. The Executive Lounge was a good size which had a library plus an alfresco deck extending from the lounge. We received great service both from the table attendants and the attendants at the desk who were so courteous and patient - they went above and beyond in their service. There was a good selection of drinks however the food in the evening was disappointing with cold chips and small pieces of crumbed fish. Breakfast next morning was not much better with the bacon being thick pieces of pork and the fried eggs (that were really poached eggs) were cold, but the toast and café latte were really nice. The Hilton is located next door to the K-Arena building where concerts are held and we found the Baydeck Beer & Grill (within that complex) a great place to have dinner (highly recommend the Crispy Soft-shell crab). There is also a handy Lawsons store under the Hilton building. We caught the Keikyu limousine bus (an airport shuttle bus) to Haneda airport which was on time and a good price (1000Yen each) which was a nice surprise as I did not know about this bus even after months of researching airport transport from the Hilton. You can book and prepay at the Hilton using a QR code however as we didn’t have our mobile phones “on” we took the chance there would be seats on the day (which there were) and we paid on embarking. Would stay there again.

Highlights - wonderful check in progress in Executive Lounge as Diamond member with personal service (lovely staff Watanabe and Fukushima) - spacious and modern guest room with great view of harbour and surrounding skyscrapers - great tea selection in Executive Lounge - accurate and perfect service as expected in a luxury Japanese hotel Improvement potential - the happy hour food option in the lounge was disappointing: only one soup plus fried fish and corn. As such an expensive hotel I expected much more - the breakfast in the main restaurant closes at 10 am, but at 9:30 am the service team started to clean up all food and drinks from the buffet, so basically if someone shows up at 9:30, there will be less or no food left worst case

The stay was fine. It felt like a fairly typical Hilton experience. The view was spectacular. The upgrade process was somewhat curious. I was informed that an upgrade had been arranged. In practice it meant a room a few floors higher. I was also told that if I planned to check out early the following day a higher floor upgrade might be possible at that time. The staff explained this quite carefully and I appreciate the effort. At the same time the explanation felt slightly more elaborate than the upgrade itself. The hotel is comfortable enough. I simply expected a somewhat smoother experience. As a Diamond member I generally expect upgrades to be handled more straightforwardly when availability exists. I understand that practices in Japan may be more conservative in this regard.
