This hotel is one of the Toyoko inn chain hotels. It locates the center of downtown and most of the sightseeing sites are within walking distance, for example, it takes 10 min to Kumamoto castle. From the airpot, I took a bus (730yen) and got off at Kumamoto bus terminal. Then walked to the hotel, 3 min. You can choose smoking or non-smoking rooms. They serve free breakfast, simple and healthy but enough good. You can use free WiFi service. The staff are nice and healpful. I think foreign tourists can enjoy staying at this hotel.

“RELIABLE TOYOKO”

The Toyoko brand is consistently good. While in the "business" category of hotels, it's cleanliness, efficiency and pleasant, helpful staff is always reassuringly reliable. Nice breakfast, laundry machines and, excellent location mean this is another of Toyoko Inn's user friendly hotels.

“Good Hotel in the heart of kumamoto ”

We stayed for two nights at the start of our Japan trip. The location is excellent and right next to a long pedestrian zone shopping street. The shopping street is covered so you are protected from direct sunlight and other wearther elements. Next to various cloth and electronic shops, there is a vast variety of Japanese restaurants available but also western style places if you need them, like a Starbucks, McDonalds, Baskin Robins and also sweets stores like Mister Donuts or some coffee shops. There are also plenty of convenient stores around and one right across the hotel (Lawson). This one has also an ATM in the store which accepts Visa/international cards. Various other places( including banks) I have tried in the area only take local cards. The rooms are Japanese size. You should at least get the standard and not economy size. We had a standard room and it was OK in size. A queen-sized bed, a very small walk way around the bed, a small sideboard with fridge, safe and TV, the bathroom for very small people and that was it. But very clean, and everything you need for a short stay, if you are OK with basic. Our kids had the economy room as this was the only one left. And everything seems to be another 20% smaller... Parking: if you plan to come with a car as we did, I recommend to try to make a pre-reservation at the hotel. They have only a few spaces next to the hotel. Not very expensive, we paid about 8 USD for one night. The first night we had to stay at a parking garage, a few walking min away. If you have no parking reservation, there is no real parking in front of the hotel, so just for a quick unloading it will be OK. But the streets are very small so if there is a bigger car coming, you will block the street. To get there, you have to navigate through a small maze of one way streets, so make sure you have a good navigation system. If you park at one of the parking garages, make sure you check the rates very carefully, as this can be very expensive. The reception will help you on the right garage and rates... Breakfast : small but good Japanese style breakfast with different kind of rice, vegetables, miso soup. A very small selection of bread and jams. Nothing special. If you want more continental, there are alternatives in the shopping street, just a few walking min away Staff was very friendly. Overall a good stay.

Being so close to the covered mall and surrounded by restaurants that come alive in the evening was a joy. The front desk staff had limited English like most hotels in Japan but go out their way to help you out. Room was very clean and was a decent size for a twin room. The room was brightly lit and had a good working A/C with easy controls. The bed was firm but not too bad and the pillow had decent loft. The bathroom was small but not too tight as to move around in. The shower controls were on the sink tap which seems to be the norm in most of these hotels. Breakfast consisted mostly of Japanese food since most of the clientele were so other than coffee/tea/orange juice and some buns/bread don't expect much continental fare. There is a Lawsons store across the street which sells good yogurt for the morning and there's a couple of grocery stores in the covered mall where you can purchase fruits. From the Kumamoto station exit the one indicating trams and get on the "A" tram. Go 8 stops to Karashima Cho stop (170 yen) and enter the covered mall. Walk down 2 small blocks on the left there is a covered arch with a sign. Walk down half a block to the hotel. If you don't like this hotel then there's a Comfort hotel across the street.
