This was our best stay in Japan! The staff was so friendly and accomodating. The lady desk clerk took our luggage to our room and showed us how to use the lights and keys etc. The meals were delicious and meticulous. The onsen was so relaxing. The next day we asked for a taxi because we didn't want to drag around 2 suitcases each, and none were available. After waiting for 20 minutes to see if they can locate one, we decided to walk. The young man who checked us in the day before and checked us out, trying to find us a taxi and answered our questions about the Naked Sakura Festival, came running out after us and gave us 2 tickets to the Naked Sakura Festival as an accomodation for not finding us a taxi. Wow! That's customer service! I couldn't read his name tag, I'm so sorry but he was a young handsome slim man.

This ryokan is located in an ideal location just 10 min walk from the train station . Also there are about 15 car park lots that u can park your car . It is ideal for visiting Kimono forest and bamboo forest and also fu fu no yu Onsen as well as boating along the Katsura river . The rooms are of an adequate size with twin beds . Temperature control is good though wifi is poor . The bathtub is lovely with good water pressure . Beds are firm though only one pillow per bed is provided. Two bottles of mineral water are supplied. Dinner is very good with sukiyaki beef though the appetizers and dessert can be improved . Breakfast is buffet with rice / porridge and small little dishes as well as onsen eggs . We skipped the public bath and went to Fu Fu No Yu which was excellent . Overall a good stay though the wifi needs to be improved .

The location is perfect, ample car parking and right on the river. The river, the bamboo forest and the monkey sanctuary are all in easy walking distance. All of them are very crowded so it is wonderful to get away from it all in the peace and quiet of the Ranzan. All staff were very pleasant and helpful. The beds were a little hard for us. The room was fine but the bathroom was a bit dated.

For the price, this establishment needs to have more English-speaking employees. We actually enjoyed the location and the service. As other reviewers have said the rooms are quite dated, however we could deal with that. The problem for foreigners is that there can be many misunderstandings when an establishment that accepts foreigners as guests are not prepared for them. This is our second day here, and we have encountered just one employee who could speak English and could be of assistance (Rika, very gracious person at the front desk). We had reservations for dinner at 5:30 for our stay, or so we thought. And breakfast, also at a set time. There is only one restaurant, and everyone eats the same thing. We went to our 5:30 dinner reservation, only to be told that the only opening was at 7:30–Two hours later. Looking into the dining room, we could see only a few tables set up, so it is inexplicable except for their rigidity, why another table could not be set up for the early seating if there was a misunderstanding, especially since it is caused by a lack of language skills on their part. In the hospitality industry, an establishment has to provide service to a variety of customers. We have tried our best to be good visitors, to learn about the culture, and adhere to customs. This hotel needs to do its part, or to indicate that English is not spoken there.
