“A Warm and Welcoming Ryokan Where We Felt Comfortable Even Using a Wheelchair”

Surrounded by the beautiful nature of Mt. Gozaisho, this was a very warm and relaxing ryokan. As we expected to arrive later than planned, I called the hotel in advance. From that very first phone call, the staff were incredibly kind and polite, which already made us feel at ease before arriving. … more

“A wonderful experience, worth the drive to get there”

Not difficult to reach if you have a car. We drove here after arriving at Nagoya (Chubu) Airport. The lobby is on another floor and accessible from a lift. The room was comfortable and with a beautiful view of the mountains. After dinner, there was a buffet dessert which were too full to enjoy ever… more

“Lovely staff, lovely food.”

This hotel is a little out of the way which I can imagine is perfect of what you’re looking for is peace and tranquility but we had booked this for the Suzuka GP and it was a little out of the way. Staff were however fantastic at helping us getting us a taxi every morning to the track. The food was… more

“Great location, friendly hotel”

This hotel is right in the centre of town which makes it easy to get around to the sights worth seeing. The indoor / outdoor onsen was huge with a nice view but it's open to the public - can get crowded. I particularly enjoyed the dinner and breakfast buffet which had a good spread of Japanese food… more

“A Nice Surprise”

There are quite a few onsen hotels in the Yunoyama area stretching along on the way up hill. The onsen area is located half way up the hill where you can take a ropeway to reach the mountain top. We left our car to the hotel attendant looking after in-coming guests at the side of the road which is … more

  • Guests at Shikanoyu Hotel say: Surrounded by the beautiful nature of Mt. Gozaisho, this was a very warm and relaxing ryokan. As we expected to arrive later than planned, I called the hotel in advance. From that very first phone call, the staff were incredibly kind and polite, which already made us feel at ease before arriving. The ryokan is located along a slope, but when we arrived, the staff warmly welcomed us and kindly helped with both our luggage and our indoor wheelchair. Since the parking area and entrance are slightly apart and we did not have enough hands to unload everything ourselves, their help truly meant a lot to us. We stayed in a modern Japanese-style room called “Hoshifuruyama.” The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable even for wheelchair users, with plenty of space around the beds and wash area. The fresh green mountain view from the large window was absolutely beautiful. The entrance area was also wide, with a tatami bench beside the shoe cabinet, which made wheelchair transfers much easier. There were so many complimentary sweets and snacks in the room that we could hardly finish them all, and in addition to drinks in the refrigerator, there was even a water server provided. Our room attendant was a staff member from Nepal who spoke both Japanese and English very well. He shared stories about Nepal and how he spends his days off, and our children listened with great interest. It was a lovely experience, and we also felt happy to see international staff members working so naturally and warmly at the ryokan. Dinner was a beautiful kaiseki meal, and every dish was delicious and beautifully presented, full of seasonal flavors. After dinner, there was a dessert buffet in the lobby, and our children especially enjoyed making their own soft-serve ice cream. Instead of serving a fixed dessert course with the kaiseki meal, guests could freely enjoy sweets afterward at their own pace, which we thought was a wonderful idea. On the night we stayed, there was also a special lantern event on the rooftop, which created a magical atmosphere. Unfortunately, the rooftop could only be reached by stairs, so it was difficult for wheelchair users, but it became a wonderful memory for our young children. Before our stay, I had assumed the large public bath would probably not be accessible and did not ask in advance. However, upon arrival, the front desk staff kindly told us, “Wheelchair users are welcome too.” We visited early in the morning when it was quieter. There was only a small step at the entrance, and a shower chair was available, so taking a shower there was no problem at all. There were also two smaller outdoor baths where guests could relax quietly, each with slightly different water temperatures. The hot spring water left our skin feeling wonderfully smooth and our hearts deeply relaxed. Breakfast was served as a traditional Japanese meal at our table rather than as a buffet, which allowed us to enjoy a calm and peaceful morning. The gentle flavors and locally sourced ingredients made it especially comforting. Even at check-out, the staff kindly helped us carry our luggage again, which we truly appreciated. The building itself has a sense of history, but even more memorable than that was the warmth and kindness of everyone working there. We would love to visit again in another season.
