“Wonderful hospitality”

A family room with four beds and private bathroom was small as we had expected. Heating worked well. We had every morning a good breakfast and twice a dinner in the hotel's restaurant. A family room with four beds and private bathroom was small as we had expected. Heating worked well. We had every morning a good breakfast and twice a dinner in the hotel's restaurant. The set dinner had both times more than 13 items based mainly on local ingredients, many of them coming from the farm of the hotel owner who took great care of the customers. The onsen was great after days on the slopes. The only negative details was that boots and clothes did not really dry in the drying room downstairs.

Hotel was difficult to find due to the address being wrong on hotels. You should search using the phone number: +81 0261-75-2133 in google. There are 5 parking spots out front and then another 5-10 across the street. Parking is not an additional price. We rang the bell at the front counter and the owner popped right out to help us. He provided us with our room key, information and three maps for the area. He spoke english well. Our room had 4 twin beds; 2 made up for my husband and myself. We had a bathroom and shower in the room, but I think there may be some rooms that use communal bathrooms. The room also had a small couch, coffee table, two stools, tv, safe and closet with plenty of room for our snowboarding coats. The hotel is modest and could use some updating, but we were quite comfortable. That is not a priority in our travels. Upon check-in, we failed to mention we were vegetarians and assumed the breakfast was buffet style. Later on the first day, we realized they had set out an entire breakfast for us and we had not shown. We felt awful and discussed the fact that we were vegetarian with the owner. Later, he brought us fresh apples from his farm. The next two mornings, he had out vegetarian friendly foods with fresh tofu, vegetables and fruit all from his farm! There is a dry room in the basement with some paid lockers and open shelves. It was not very warm, so we kept our gloves and coat in our room overnight, but the boots downstairs.

Hotel St Malte is a traditional Japanese Ski Lodge that opened to Westerners for the first time last year. Overall we were really pleased with our stay. The place is clean, comfortable, with a great Onsen. Management was extremely helpful. The manager/owners English warmed up as the visit progressed - unlike our Japanese. It transpired they had a courtesy bus, not obvious from information provided - so it payed to ask. They were happy dropping us off to pick up and return a hire car rented for the day, dropping us down to the get the bus to Nagano on departure etc. Wi-Fi was free and fast. Snow conditions in Hakuba were mediocre, they were having their warmest winter for years and so we decided to head back to Tokyo two days (and nights earlier). Fully expecting to have to pay for the full seven nights we booked - we were charged only for the five days we stayed. Pretty good! The hotel offers the option of dining in the restaurant but one needs to book ahead - the previous night for breakfast and in the morning for dinner. We ate breakfast once at the hotel and it was a traditional Japanese breakfast - generous portions and tasty - but not necessarily the start to the day we were looking for. So we opted for cornflakes and muesli purchased from the nearby 7/11. The management were very happy to recommend other locations for dinner and we were very pleased with Jan Ken Pon a low key place frequented primarily by locals that was 100 metres walk from the hotel. Downsides ..... lack of a western breakfast option, NO AREA TO DRY SKI GEAR and no clothes dryer .... not quite sure whether the warm room was not functioning or did not exist ... we never did get to the bottom of this issue. Overall - reasonable price, great location, helpful staff.
