Karuizawa Elegance Value for Money Jun 2023 Solo The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from JR Station. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by an old uncle who kindly helped me with the luggage. The room is of good size but the bed linen is old. The quilt cover was torn with holes and it was not tied properly…I had to ask the cleaner to change it for me on the second day. The AC in the room isn't working, so it gets a bit stuffy. When opening the window, be sure to remember closing it with the netting, big mosquitoes and insects are plenty. I got bitten on the neck and shoulder during the night. Western and Japanese style breakfast are served. 2 bags of Japanese tea are given in the room each day, but no coffee. Guests have to pay if they want to drink coffee. Since this is a European style hotel, the Management should seriously consider providing drip coffee in the room. The hotel has a nice chapel for wedding shooting which nestled in the wood. Overall, it's a good hotel to stay...

“Better than first impression”

The hotel is well-situated just a 10 minute or so walk to the Ginza street. The lobby area is quite small although there is a nice lounge adjoining. There was no-one at the desk when we arrived and it took a while to check in the two individuals ahead of us. Our rooms were on the second floor and one of the two front staff helped with the bags. On opening the door to one room, I was alarmed to see the worn, and quite stained, carpet. The room was spacious, and beds comfortable. The bathroom was fairly standard, and amenities basic. The bath was a reasonable size, and the shower had a rubber(?) hose. Not good, I thought, but I was surprised how powerful the shower was. Care should be taken with the hot water since it is very hot. The clock in the room was broken but it didn't really matter although it formed part of the 'first impression'. All the staff were excellent. They were very friendly and went out of their way to meet any request. Their English may not be good though. It wasn't necessary to use for us. Every day of our 3 night stay the hotel looked brighter and nicer. Due to Covid, the restaurant had limited seating. We expected to eat breakfast out every day but they managed to fit us in one morning. And what a great breakfast it was, at very reasonable cost. We also had dinner one evening at the restaurant in the other building. We were glad we did. Excellent food! We later heard that the owner of the hotel was a French chef (French as in food not nationality). All-in-all a very nice stay. I do think they should upgrade the rooms a bit though. A new carpet wouldn't go amiss.
